Since this is the closest to electrical, I might as well post my message here....I did a search and seems to be V1 has not been discussed before. I will be installing my V1 by hard wiring. V1 has a Direct-wire Power Adapter to be hard wired. What is the best electrical system that is in the overhead lighting & moon roof switches that would be switched off when the ignition is switched off and has 12 VDC when the ignition switch is on? Thanks.

I had an installer do mine. If you don't get an answer, let me know and I can ask them how they did it.

Thanks. Please do ask him which overhead light is the right one. Oh yes...the color of the wire will also be helpful. I will not be doing a Stealth V1.

I hooked up my Escort 8500 to the center lights right above the rear-view mirror. Simple job, and should be identical for any other radar detector.

Could you investigate which specific wire color did you use?

Blah...I forgot what wire I did for my hardwire.

Let me find a DIY that explains it.

That's it. Hardwire to the UGDO. Thanks.

This is the one that I followed. I had to wiggle the ground wire a bit on the screw to make a good metal to metal contact. It has worked fine since.

I also used the MadRussian DIY to hardwire my V1. Very simple and I'm the worst at electronics. One of my favorite mods!

Where did you guys mount your V1? I noticed that the windshield is concave as you look from the inside. And so mounting will not be flat if mounting close to the rearview mirror. Looking for the best place to mount for the best full coverage for detection without impairing driving visibility.

In my z, I have passport above my rearview mirror, left side.

On the e46, I don't think this is possible, so I just threw it as close as possible to the rear view mirror on the left side

This is an old picture, but this is still where my V1 is mounted.

2634

The windshield is a little convex, but the V1 does sit (side to side) flat and then I adjust the mounting bracket to have it sit (front to back) level.

Because of the Stealthone, I don't have to see mine, so it's mounted just to the right of the part that holds the rear view mirror, almost behind the mirror, high on the windshield. It doesn't always stay stuck to the window (I think it's a suction cup issue), but the power cord supports it if it slips.

Perfect. I stated that the windshield was concave. You are right. It is convex. My bad. Thanks.

Concave/convex, just depends on what side of the glass you're on!

John..how is the StealthOne hooked up? Is the V1 exposed or hidden? Could you provide a photo? Thanks.

The V1 stlil needs to have line of sight for radar detection, so they still recommend it high on the windshield. What the StealthOne does is show the output of the V1 on your Nav (or radio if no Nav). So, none of the lights on the V1 light up at all. Theoretically, you could mount it anywhere because of that feature, but Valentine still recommends a clear line of sight. So, I do have the V1 kinda hidden behind the rear view to the right, and next to the rear-view mounting bracket... so it's not totally obvious that it's there, but you could still tell, especially if you knew to look for it. I like that coming from behind, left front, or left of the car it would not be obvious it's there and there are certainly no lights to tip it off.

EDIT: I should also add that he S1 controls are hidden with the wiring, so there's nothing to see other than the V1.

I want something different than my 8500x50. Those stupid TSR signals on the highways annoy me

I have documented my V1 / Radaractive install here http://radaractive.com/forum/showthread.php?73-2004-BMW-M3-Coupe

:thumbsup

In the first pic you can see where I have my V1 mounted...

I'll take that as a compliment....thanks :thumbsup I was looking for a suitable stealth setup for my V1 and came across this. Having the RadarActive app on my iPhone and the V1 integrated into the app provided more awareness since others using this app also alerted to any LEO using radar or laser. It would show up on the map and all I would have to do is either confirm or deny presence of LEOs along the route I was driving. On the most part I'd say that this app works pretty much 80% of the time....that is, when the app indicates that there's LEOs in the area you see them. Still, that's no biggie since I usually travel 5 - 10 over when going to work and back....:)

Cool app. Us Blackberry users have nothing like that. Perhaps you could put up a full review in the Product Review section? I'd love to hear more about it and how you like it. Cost, ease of use, etc?

Very neat setup Charlie. :thumbsup But I'm with Lawrence, back in the Jurassic Era!

FWIW, I'm not really concerned whether people see my V1 or not, but I feel most do not notice it. I was pulled over one time w/ my V1 (I was in an area where I normally have "grocery store" detections and wasn't paying attention). The officer noticed my V1 as she was looking in the car, not before, and made a point to call me out as she hands me a ticket, "Mam I've just noticed you have a nice radar detector, we should not be having this conversation. Please pay more attention."
This was after my answer to the "Why are you in a hurry today" question was "I wasn't paying attention".

Sounds like a great idea John :thumbsup I will do that over the weekend :)

@ Ryan, thanks and nice story...:)

Very neat!!! I was thinking about a V1, as the S/C sometimes is too much of a temptation to ignore!

I'm assuming the V1 with Radaractive trumps the Escort 9500i?

9500 has a escort live thing that is similar to the v1 and this update.

However, the escort cable to make this happen costs like $100 and there is a subscription. Stupid

What's the latest on life with the S/C? You get the other issues fixed?
EDIT: Sorry, realized it's a little OT.

OT: Coolant overhaul was on the top of my list, and it's done; now the engine warms up like it should. I think mileage is better, too!

I have VC gasket, VANOS overhaul, and plugs on schedule for next week...wish me luck! Also, I'm going to ask my alignment pro to raise the car and realign it; right now, the front bumper cover would make a very effective shovel!

In terms of mounting, my 8500 is on the right side on the rear view mirror. Pretty stealthy, and still has a clear line of sight. My detector's internal speaker is damaged (it was mounted off the mirror on my sport bike when I crashed it at 120-130mph), so I've got a 120db 'screamer' speaker hooked up to the escort and hidden under the center interior lights, where the radar is hooked up.

I can't speak against the 9500i but can say that my setup (V1 w/ RadarActive) gives me the confidence to run my ///M into XXX speeds occasionally. There is an interface box you also have to get (@ $80) to get the RadarActive app to interface with the V1 so that the V1 automatically reports radar/laser detections onto the RadarActive network but you can also manually do this. For me, the V1/RadarActive does the job :thumbsup

Best part is that there's no subscription for RadarActive.

So, sorry to necro this thread, but I was trying to wire my Passport up using this and had issues... I got to the "Test" phase and no power to the detector with the key on Position 2. The wires on my UGDO were different colors than depicted on others (brown, black, & clear) or I thought maybe my ground was no good (my screw is painted, not silver). So I dug out my voltmeter and checked the ground by using the cigarette lighter (it was good) but had no voltage to any of the UGDO wires, even grounding to door hinge bolt. I ran out of time to check fuses, but wondered if anyone has seen this problem before? I am not much of a DIY'r, so my technical know-how is pretty limited. Any ideas would be appreciated!
