So, my SS recipient on another site asking for cluster rings. Found them at a good price so went ahead and ordered them and shipped them off to my recipient today. Then lo and behold, I've never noticed this until today, but my car already had these rings, as seen in this video of the gauge light start up sequence I recorded for someone else a while ago

I did a GIS (http://www.google.com/search?q=e46+gauge+cluster&hl=en&safe=active&nord=1&site=webhp&prmd=imvns&source=lnms&tbm=isch&ei=NwjhTpuPHoiCsgKZtY2jBw&sa=X&oi=mode_link&ct=mode&cd=2&ved=0CCkQ_AUoAQ&biw=1280&bih=715) on E46 gauge clusters and it seems pretty random that some have them and some don't. The Bimmerfest E46 wiki does not have any mention of this. Were there some models that had this from the factory? My car was a single owner car, and considering it was bone stck, I do not imagine the previous owner would have installed these on mine as the only mod ever done.
