Since a few members have asked questions about this, I figured I'd throw this up here.

I did this a little over a year ago on my '03 325i with the Business CD.

This is similar to both the directions provided with the kit as well as other DIYs out there with the exception of the fact that I mounted the input jack in the sunglass tray.

What you need:

BMW OEM Auxiliary Input Kit (around $35)
Phillips head screwdriver
Non-marring prying tool for trim removal
Drill bit (1/4" according to other DIYs but eye up the size yourself as I did this a while ago and don't remember the size bit i used)
Microfiber towels to cover area around shifter

1. Disconnect battery.

2. Use your pry tool to begin to work the trim piece over the glove box out. The trim is essentially friction mounted-- straight pegs on the back of the trim press into the red rubber mounting holes you see in the pic below. Work the trim piece out until you can get a grip on it and then pull it straight out.

http://i1234.photobucket.com/albums/ff401/Kayger12/IMG00264-20100430-1734-1.jpg

3. Now do the same for the trim piece over the radio.

http://i1234.photobucket.com/albums/ff401/Kayger12/IMG00263-20100430-1734.jpg

http://i1234.photobucket.com/albums/ff401/Kayger12/IMG00262-20100430-1730-1.jpg

4. Remove the two Phillips head screws holding the radio in the dash (already removed in the trim pic above).

http://i1234.photobucket.com/albums/ff401/Kayger12/2011-01-01_09-37-07_958.jpg

5. Slide the radio out and disconnect the electrical harness and antenna lead. Before sliding out radio, place mf towel around area of shifter so you have somewhere to rest the radio unit while you disconnect without scratching trim.

6. Insert the OEM input into the electrical harness. To do this, you will have to first pull up on the blue locking tab. Seat the OEM input into the harness and replace the blue locking clip.

http://i1234.photobucket.com/albums/ff401/Kayger12/IMG00257-20100430-1712.jpg
Input seated in harness, blue clip removed.

http://i1234.photobucket.com/albums/ff401/Kayger12/IMG00255-20100430-1711.jpg
Input seated and locked.

7. Now for the sunglass tray mod-- Remove the sunglass tray by opening the flip door and pushing up on the tabs shown in the picture while working the tray out. IIRC, I used a small screwdriver to get the right leverage on these while I pulled.

http://i1234.photobucket.com/albums/ff401/Kayger12/IMG00253-20100430-1709_edited-1.jpg

8. Using your drill bit, drill a hole in the back of the sunglass tray where you would like the input jack to sit.

http://i1234.photobucket.com/albums/ff401/Kayger12/IMG00259-20100430-1719.jpg

9. Feed the aux input wire down behind the climate control unit and into the space where the sunglass tray mounts. Mount the input jack to the hole you drilled in the sunglass tray.

10. Manage your excess cable and make sure there is sufficient room to slide in both the radio and the sunglass tray.

11. Reinstall the sunglass tray-- just push it back in its home until it locks into place.

12. Reconnect the electrical harness and antenna lead to the radio. Replace the radio and secure with the Phillips head screws.

13. Replace trim pieces in the order they were removed. Just press them straight into the mounting holes.

14. Reconnect battery.

15. Turn on radio and cycle your MODE button until you see the AUX option displayed.

16. Connect the MP3 of your choice and get some tunes rolling.

17. Use the settings button to get to the AUX LEVEL display and adjust the aux master volume to a setting that works for you (I think it goes from 1-5). This setting is a master setting for the AUX input. Volume is still controlled from the volume knob and steering wheel controls.

Does all the business CD players (ie my 2004) have the AUX input capability? I have seen info that suggests that only the later ones that played mP3's had it. Mine definitely does not play mP3's...

Edit: Wait, I'm an idiot... you said that was an '03 so I should be cool.

You're good. Cycle through 'Mode' on your radio. If you see Aux input come up, you got it (right?).

Iirc, the AUX doesn't show up as a mode option until you install the auxiliary input into the harness in the back of the unit.

There was a thread somewhere out there that specified which units had the available slot for the OEM input. Pretty sure all of the Business CD units are compatible.

Funny, mine says aux when I cycle through modes. I'm going to be pissed if I take that all apart and find the aux cable already installed.

I would definitely hunt around for it- mine only cycled from radio to cd until I had the AUX input installed.

Can anyone confirm?

I'll go look around while I test obd2 apps. Who knows, someone may have hooked it up and left the wire somewhere hidden and I just never noticed. I'll know for sure on Monday when I go to install the cable.

That's odd. Do you have a CD changer?

Nope, no cd changer. I did go out there today and looked all over for a wire, I see nothing. As far as I know my radio has nothing extra plugged into it.

I could have sworn I saw aux come up cycling through modes, but today when I tried it, it was gone. Maybe I just imagined thats where it was, weird.

I think I'll install this cable tomorrow. Before I do, when I disconnect the battery - this should prevent the horn from working, correct? I figured I'd put the steering wheel emblem on with the horn disabled so I can press on it without annoying the entire complex.

Anyone have the p/n for the aux cable ? Thanks

Did some searching. Old p/ns aren't coming up on Tischer or via realoem.com search.

Part Number: 82 11 0 149 389

Here's a DIY that references the same number.

http://www.my330i.com/mod26.php

Bavarian Autosport has the kit up on their website (checked now) for $38.95. Search using the above mentioned p/n and your car.

Thanks for the links for cables ! I am thinking of doing this

1. Install aux cable to radio .
2. Install and connect this (http://www.autotoys.com/x/product.php?productid=11475) and connect to the above connector.

I think if I install these two in series I can have a one connection allowing Iphone charge/play using the normal output of the Iphone vs using the headphone out put jack. Can any of you audio techies offer some input on this plan ? Thanks again for the links and help.

I use this 2-in-1 cable (http://www.amazon.com/iPhone-Cable-Connector-Auxiliary-Charge/dp/B0037MH5W4) to have the configuration you're talking about, using the iPhone's line-out from the dock connector rather than the headphone jack. Plus, it also powers the phone through the same connection. I love the one-cord simplicity!

Yeah, it won't charge it. On a sidenote, I have both the regular iSimple iPod adaptor (not the one you mentioned above) and the OEM aux input and can switch between either source. Now if I just had USB input...

Ah-HA! That's where you'd be wrong . . . assuming you hacked a USB socket onto old cell phone car charger to convert a hard-wired 12V to the required 5V with ~2V on the USB data pins to enable iPhone USB charging. :biggrin (Or plug that cable's USB end into a "Works with iPhone" cigarette adapter.)

I'm assuming that's exactly the kind of circuitry that's in the shrinkwrapped bundle on the cable you posted.

The plug adapter I referenced has a separate 12v power hook up to charge the Iphone .It does not have a USB port on it,I think its pretty slick and will do the job for me .

I got a question, I have a ipod connector in the glove box that doesnt charge but does play thru the stero, can control next song and so on. I dont know who makes it came in the car, but i see in the back where the CD player would be it has no loose connector ends so I figure it may be a DICE but not sure. So now for my question, if I install the oem AUX port will I be able to use both or will one cancel out the other. Thanks for the help and sorry for thee long windedness.

Hey guys,

I'm planning on getting an AUX kit for my ZHP and installing it before I leave for school next wednesday. I see that the install is pretty straight forward but which AUX kits do you all get? I would like a kit and not have to go buy all the components separately.

Thanks!

Did you get this worked out?

Iirc, the plastic piece you're talking about has a kind of hinged motion to it when you remove it that helps lift/disengage the connector out of the slot.

Just did this aux addition to my zsp today! I have an early 02 model but came up on a free 04 business cd so I got the aux kit to go with it. I did it so that I could get away from using my fm modulator for my satellite radio. Changing stations when crossing different areas is a pain...
I did the glove box install since my xm dock is right beside the glove box and use the 12v adaptor for the power from there anyway. Had a dice ipod adaptor for the 02 radio and the sound quality wasn't great IMO, the aux is much better sound quality.
