View Full Version : Transmission fluid?

I changed my all the fluids in my car a few months ago, I imagine the oil in the tranmission was stock (car had 100k miles on it) and with the new Mobil 1 fluid the transmission is noticeably notchier.

When I went in to the parts store they only gave me gear oil, but now that I look in the book it calls for a mixture of oil and ATF.

What gives? What should be in the tranny? Does it need atf?

Sorry- are we talking a manual or auto trans?

I'm assuming from your sig that you have a manual trans. It all depends on the sticker on the trans that determines what gear oil works best. Some use redline others use different stuff. Somewhere around 75W-80 gear oil.

Missed the sig. Pentosin MTF-2, RP Synchromax, Red Line MTL or Red Line D4 ATF are all good.

That's right, I couldn't remember, Pentosin MTF-2 is what I used in my tranny with a yellow sticker marked MTF-2.

Redline MTL has worked well for me in the past.

Currently I have Mobil 1 75-80 or something like that. It's what the computer showed when I bought the oil. Should I just drain a little and add some ATF to it?

I would do a full drain and full. It's only 2 qts.

A total of two quarts? What the ratio of oil to atf?

No. Ok... You're freaking me out here. The only thing you put in your tranny is transmission fluid. Period. 2 qts of either MTL, Pentosin, RP Synchromax, or D4 ATF. You choose.

I must have misread the book.

Some people mix Red Line D4 ATF with Red Line MTL. This supposedly gives smoother cold shifts.

Outside of that, you wouldn't use ATF for your trans.

I must have misread the book.

It says that in Bentley.

Read thru the thread linked below. You'll also want to verify which manual trans you have. There are 2. Link to more info in post #38:

This is the first I have ever heard of mixing fluids. Blown away. I apologize.

No apologies. I read about it when I was researching which fluid to use.
