I have a slight rattle in what I think is the stock sub\unit mounted under the top of the trunk. What is the best plan of attack to get in there and tighten whatever has worked it's way loose down?

Everyone with the HK system has this rattle. It's caused by the rear deck lid vibrating against the metal underneath. There is a great DIY on here you can follow to fix it correctly. I'll be doing it myself when the weather is nice and warm. There is also a 'tennis ball mod' but that's not as good as the DIY on here.

The quick way is to take out the sub housing and cram some stuff between the gap. Here is the long and for sure method I did on mine:

That's an... involved fix. I'm going to need to steel myself before starting that....

Want an easy fix?

Tennis balls.

Take out the subwoofer assembly (four 8mm screws), and shove 2-4 tennis balls into the holes to buffer between the metal frame and the rear deck.

I may go do that as a temp fix. (Going to have to pick up some tools before taking on the Hermes project.) I'll have to go pick some up, my dog would be confused and upset if he saw me stealing his tennis balls to jam into my car.

You can use some microfiber towels for now instead of tennis balls, you can pretty much use anything that will fit in the gap

Hermes is the extended version for those that wanted a complete anti rattle/ rear deck refurbish. Just remove your subwoofer and look up inside. On my car the anti rattle bracket was installed by BMW but NOT bolted done for some reason. I bolted it down and stuffed three tennis balls up inside to keep the rear shelf tight. The difference was night and day.

Here is a photo of the bracket and the bolt that was missing on mine.

You do, try driving for a while with your stereo off and you'll notice it. I've began to notice other rattles I need to deal with still

I used Stereo batting, granted the sedan isn't as bad as the coupe rattle..
