Great question. Ask my phone that. I have no clue...

Hows the new rubber?

Grippy :)

It's like ice when they are cold, once they get up to temp they are crazy sticky. Never overheated, the grip was always there.

Hard to tell when you're loosing grip, not as loud as my previous tires.

I was gonna say because he was going so fast the sound couldn't keep up. Then I realized the sound came first...

Course looked pretty dang tight but I know it's hard to get a feel by watching a video. Only thing I saw was you looked a little late in a few of the slaloms where it looked like you were turning right at the cone instead of just before it, putting you a little behind. But it was also hard to really follow with the sound issue. Looking forward to the go-pro :)

What kind of tires are they? I ask because when I bought my Hankook R-S3 tires in 2011, they seemed to have a lot of grip when warm but were pretty quiet, barely any squealing unless I got the car completely sideways. Whereas my Bridgestone RE-760 (and the 2 Continental ExtremeDW) tires seem to make more noise when close to the limit. I'll be doing AutoX tomorrow in San Diego, hopefully get to explore the limit of the tires (2 Conti ExtremeDW up front, 2 old Hankook R-S3 in back) more.

Here's my last track day, Buttonwillow on April 22nd.

Last year I ran Toyo T1Rs, which are now my DD tires. They were VERY vocal when grip was going

I run 235/265 RS3s now. It'll take time to get use to them

Ah yes, RS-3s... before I tried them I heard they love the heat and don't grip as well as Star Specs in cold or wet conditions. But I didn't know they were the "strong and silent" type until I tried them.

I "won" the 6-mod class in AutoX yesterday in San Diego, but it was only a technical win, not a true victory of superior driving. The class is usually dominated by the Stoia family, a dad and his two sons all co-driving the same modifiedE36 325i, plus a really fast driver who wasn't there yesterday. In practice the Stoias' best times were 1-2 seconds faster than my best times. But in timed runs, apparently all 3 of them went off course in the same area and got "DNFs" for 11 of their 12 timed runs. Also 4 other 6-mode drivers (including at least one who was a lot faster than I am) left after practice runs.

So I won, but it's not very satisfying because I know the best I could have done would have been 4th place if everybody in class stayed and didn't get DNF'd. To add to my embarassment, at least 3 or 4 6-stock drivers were faster than me.

Nope, I swore I hit it though.

I hit a cone earlier in the run, so I checked my mirror real quick and it was standing up still. I swore I nailed it straight on though...it was that tight.

M0nk3y, nice looking runs! I guess those Hankook R-S3 tires are not totally silent. Did I hear you say "YES!" at the end of the first run in the video?

Here are 2 of my timed runs from this past Sunday. I placed first in my class (6-cylinder modified) but there were only 4 of us in that class. I did beat 4 of the 6 "turbo stock" (135/335/535) drivers plus 2/10 "M-stock" and 2/4 "M-modified" drivers. But overall I was mid-pack, ranking 21st out of 42 drivers who got times. That's better than I typically do in San Diego CCA events, where I often come in 4th/7 in "6-mod" and 40th/60 overall. My rear tires are 255/40/17 Hankook R-S3 with about 12 track days and no tread on them; front tires are fairly new 245/40/17 Conti ExtremeDW.

Derek, I just enjoyed watching your video. Probably the first time I watched in-car (or stuck-to-car) video of Sears Point/Infineon. Looks like fun, though I understand now what they mean by it having a lot more walls than Thunderhill or Buttonwillow. Was wondering for a moment why your GoPro HD video was sharper than mine, then noticed in title you have the GoPro HD Hero 2; I have the older HD Hero.

Was that a Honda S2000 without any roll bar that you passed?

Thanks!

I didn't say YES! that soon, it was after I heard/saw my time and it was announced I took first for the AM session in my class (in RAW time). I was thrown into a index class because no one else was running A-Stock, so a bunch of other cars, including a Evo X in ASP I was battling against. I was throwing down 49.4s my first 2 runs, then got a 49.2 but coned it, so I was pretty happy when I broke 48.

The Evo X did own me on the PM session (darn AWD) and he got a 50.4. I got a 51.3

Anyways, my final time was 100.209, the ASP Evo was 99.724. But when it came down to PAX I beat him over a second and a half :)

Big weekend for me, 2 events!

Saturday, normal points event:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hqT0OgjySWQ

Sunday, normal points in AM. Then a special event in the PM.

Special event took the top 64 PAX times in the AM and did a runoff. Then the top 32 PAX times from those got into the next field. It was then narrowed to the top 16, and a shootoff bracket then started until 1 remained. I only got to the top 32, but for running street tires in a R-Comp PAX, I'm pretty happy with it.

I learned alot of things today with the car.

First, I think I'm better off strapping ice stakes to my car somehow and giving it a go. Dear god the Hook suck like no other in the wet. UGH!

Secondly, the car is actually surprisingly easy to control with oversteer and throttle control. I didn't loop it, which I'm actually really surprised about. The last turn I found my self hammering down on the throttle with minor oversteer to carry speed through. I think it helped actually.

With that being said, I put down my fastest run when it was starting to dry up, go figure. 53.521

No autocross for the Z4M today, instead it was an E36 M3

http://sphotos-a.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-prn1/62054_3945810771928_18958147_n.jpg

Mods included: DA Coilovers (400# front, 500# rear), Camber Plates, 255 Star Specs on Apex Wheels, Lightweight Single Mass Flywheel, 3.3x LSD Diff.

It was a fun car, and I'm hooked on a DA Coilover route.

Ended up 8/17 in the tire index. It was a challenge event, so other SCCA regions all came from around and joined, tough competition. Also tough to know the limit of a car in 5 runs when you never drove it prior!

And for people that actually understand this, you get a cookie. It was late night fun

Finally bumping this up with a video from the E36 M3.

It's certainly a tough car to drive. The owner of the car said, don't use the brakes...just use the throttle to turn the car. I think I did alittle too much, but it resulted in my fastest run of the day (Had a 53.0xx but I had a phantom cone).

PS - Watch the whole video...even after the finish, you'll hear a couple funny comments from a person that we were convincing to go Auto-X with us, this was his first run ever.

The S2000 I spun my first run out...very tail happy.

The E36 M I spun twice...

I figured out (via help with the co-owner of the E36 M driver) that I put in too much steering inputs that is killing my time. I need to maintain a single steering input and modulate the throttle more.

Nice pics Monk3y. Looks like you had alot of fun.

I posted this video in my build thread too. This is one of my two sessions that I was able to film at the BmwCcca HPDE at Summit Point's Jefferson Circuit in Sept. I also have a vid from the instructors session in a very fast E30 M3. I will hopefully be on Summit Main Circuit in a couple weeks. Main is a much bigger faster track. Enjoy.

Friday November 16th at Thunderhill, my 4th day on this track but first time returning there in 2 years. Sporadic rain so I got 4 wet sessions and 1 dry. This was the dry one. Light turnout, only 14 people in our run group and fewer than that after lunch. I was relaxed on track with no drama--no spins, no offs, very little passing. Maybe too relaxed, as video shows I was no faster than my last time 2 years ago.

Gloves are fine but I've never tried any other driving gloves, so can't compare! Was part of a cheap "Lemons Package" that came with single-layer suit, Nomex underwear, driving shoes, and basic Snell 2005 helmet. Here's the same track later that day with some rain.

Derbo, my friend, you are far faster than I am! I could see if I drive more aggressively and improve my line on each corner, I *might* be able to do Thunderhill in 2:20 on a warm dry day. No idea how I could get down to 2:11 territory.

At Buttonwillow you (or somebody) ran the E39 around in about 2:12, which is 5 seconds faster than my best time there in the ZHP (2:17).

At Buttonwillow CW13, my personal best is 2.08.xxx in the first video. The 2nd video I was just playing around chasing the E39 to see what his average times roughly were. I wish I had thunderhill footage but I didn't get a Gopro then.

Thunderhill is a fun course and its definitely one that requires a little more balls on a few corners (turn 5, turn 8)

My first time at Thunderhill I was driving a 2:20. There is definitely plenty of places to work on to get up to that kind of speed! I think mainly the focus is to look at the corners individually and see which ones you want to work on. ie. Turn 6. This corner setups for turn 7, 8 all the way to 9. If you lose too much speed on turn 6, you end up screwing up the speeds of 7,8, and entry of 9. Exit of 9 is also important since it is a downhill straight towards turn 10. I think working on those exit speeds before straights will shave the most time off the lap times since entrance speed of the straights affects how fast you enter the next corner dramatically.

Best drivers with similar cars were running around 51. Best BMW M3 drivers (E36 and E46, coilovers, and stickier tires) were running 47 or 48 seconds. This was my best lap.

I think a lot of the understeer is the nut behind the wheel. I should be back there 4/20 hopefully with better driving technique.

This is not quite AutoX or track but probably fits here. Electric kart at K1 Speed. I try to pass the guy in the green shirt at 3:27 but he whacks me a few seconds later to get back in front. Not sure if that was my mistake (incomplete pass) or his mistake.

Looking at the pictures again, it appears the Saturn races in E3/PTE. The PT (Performance Touring) classes range from PTB to PTF, so PTE must be on the slower side. E3 is one of 6 endurance racing classes E0-E3 plus ES & ESR. Just took a quick look at the NASA "race car classing for dummies (http://www.nasaproracing.com/proracing/Which-Class-To-Choose.pdf)" document.

Edit--Why do I care? The first car I bought was a Saturn S-series and I still have it. If it had a 5-speed MT, I'd consider putting in a roll cage and turning it into a dedicated track car. Dent-resistant plastic body panels!

And finally, here's a video from Sunday's last session. Both my Saturday and Sunday instructors drive 1988 Mustangs at the track, one races in the American Iron class while the other does Time Trial.

Autocross on May 25th with BMW CCA Golden Gate Chapter, at Marina airport. This is my 6th and fastest run at 53.5 seconds. The event organizer drives a ZHP and his best time was 50.5 seconds, a 3 second gap. I know he's a better driver and he has a few more mods, but I can never figure out how much of his faster time is driver vs. car, maybe 1.5 seconds driver, 1.5 seconds car? (He was on the new Star Specs and claimed they didn't really stick until his 4th or 5th run; I'm on Continental ExtremDW. He's also got stiffer swaybars and a 3.46 diff, and an upgraded stereo!)

Yesterday at Buttonwillow with the BMW CCA. Hadn't been to a BMW driving school since December 2011 and the instructing style was different from the NASA HPDE1, or ExtremeSpeed/SpeedVentures which have no in-car instruction unless you pay extra for it. Temp was 100F, hot and dry. Forgot to turn on the camera until about 3rd lap of my last session, here.

I was in B group but the last session blended the A and B groups. Both were relatively small so A+B together was probably fewer cars than a fully-subscribed NASA HPDE 1/2 group. Back steps out at 7:00 in the video.

yesterday's AutoX with BMW CCA at Marina Airport near Monterey (near Pebble Beach for you golfers). Course designer built a faster course in response to complaints that last month's course (which I missed) was too technical and didn't give high-HP cars room to play. This course was fast... my normal times on this lot are around 53-55 seconds. Yesteraday my best was 41.3 seconds. Of course the better drivers were still faster than me, getting times times in the 39.2 range, or 36 seconds for the fastest/best BMW driver. One guy had a 1988 Van Dieman on Hoosiers and ran about 34 seconds.

This is my 6th run, 2nd fastest time. Carrying 3 people--instructor plus two guys in back. Cell phone rings during the run. Tips and advice welcome, though I watched video from the 36-second BMW guy and he has better lines, sharper turn-ins, and better turn exits than me, plus a more aggressive start (better launch plus lighter car). So I have some ideas of how I could improve.

for comparison, here's the fastest BMW time of the day. In fact I think it was the FTOD for any semi-normal car (this is a highly prepared BMW E36 on Hooser A6 tires). He is a very skilled driver but was beaten by a 1988 Van Diemen.

Couple things I noticed off the bat.

1. If you can, try to re position your start, so the car is facing that first pointer cone. It almost seems that you lined yourself up with that left wall, which means you have to turn more and have to let up on the throttle a bit.

2. Get on the throttle and rev that sucker up to redline, you need and and especially at the start it is essentially a drag strip, there doesn't look like there is a need to short shift to gain torque.

3. There is no need to go wide on that opening slalom. Stay close to those cones, as those are huge gaps and you can approach the next set as a lane change where you just jerk the wheel real quick to shimmy the car over. Making it an arc is smooth, but slower than hugging all of those cones and staying close.

4. Giving it up, like the passenger said in the video. You'd be amazed at how much time you can shed from just braking a bit earlier. It helped me so much this past weekend. I have the same problem. If you can get on the gas way before you apex, especially with your car you should be doing so, you'll carry so much more speed into the next section vs trying to carry speed through the corner, and getting on the gas late.

Another note, try and find videos of the Top PAXing or other good drivers and see what lines they take, how early they get on the throttle...etc

One of the best San Diego CCA Autocrossers was in my run group with a highly modified and over-boosted 135i on Hankook R-S3 tires. You also run with CCA yet they allow cameras stuck onto your helmet? That is not fair! Our chapter won't allow cameras unless it's hard mounted (roll bar, head post mount, etc.) AND tethered. :(

They say it's a CCA rule, not a CVC (Connecticut Valley Chapter) rule. I call BS.
I don't understand why it's a double standard with the CCA. They tell certain chapters they can do it and tell others they can't...

Botond, the first time I went to a CCA event I rented a GoPro from the trackside photographer and they stuck it to the inside of my windshield with a suction cup. Nobody said boo. My 2nd CCA event was at Thunderhill in 2010 and they told me exactly the same thing you heard--no cameras unless hard mounted and tethered! Made me take my GoPro camera off its adhesive windshield mount. I was so mad! The next day I got some safety wire and tethered it to the rear view mirrror, in addition to the adhesive mount, and then they allowed it.

Last weekend at the first drivers' meeting, they specifically addressed this and changed the rule, saying that "small" cameras (including GoPros) could be suction-cup mounted without a tether and "small" phones would be allowed if in a dash mount specifically designed for that phone to ensure a tight fit. It was not clear to me if this was a CCA rule, Golden Gate CCA chapter rule, or Thunderhill track rule. At Oktoberfest in August at Laguna Seca, I did not hear any concerns about cameras as long as they were not hand-held. All the concerns were about sound limits, keeping front windows down, and passing rules.

Wow, you're fast compared to me. My best lap last time out was 2:14 and that's with Continental slick takeoffs. You're doing 2:10's on summer tires (though presumably the Rivals, which are very sticky for street tires). I looked at my old Thunderhill videos from November 2010, 3 years ago, and was excited that I'd taken a huge 26 seconds off my best lap time (2:40 best lap in 2010, 2:14 best lap Nov 2013). But you've still got 4 seconds on me.

And the guy following you is faster yet, but all those other guys are in S2000s, presumably modified ones.

My only excuse is I was not pushing my tires to the limit last time out, especially on turns 1, 3, 5, 6, 9, and 10. So if I had some better skills and bigger balls, I should be able to best 2:10.

I'm actually running on star spec 1 tires 245/40/17.

I have plenty to improve on the whole lap IMO. Specifically Turn 1, 6 and 10-12, I can see I have plenty of room for improvement. This is my first time out this whole year and I was uncomfortable on my brakes until the 2nd half of the day. I'm still not used to the rear end and the front sway bar on full stiff. I feel the car can corner harder but I have to gain some confidence in doing so. Turn 1 seems like I should be able to take it at 100..but I haven't had the balls to.

So hard to fathom such lap times after having been doing 1:54s on my race bike (1:53:7 is my pb). I bet if I take my zhp to the track I'll go home very depressed. :facepalm

Its a whole new ballgame with a heavy boat ;)

edit:

Also I have a Gopro from behind to hear the TSE3 exhaust on the track. Hopefully I can get to it tomorrow. :)

I know, but I gotta say that after zipping around down hwy 9 this past Saturday, I gained a whole new appreciation for my zhp. The thing handles like a dream, and it's all stock too. I can see how it can really come into its own on the race track.

One thing I will say: it lacks power on the track with all these monsters out there. I'm left wanting more.

I have my car's suspension dialed in to be faster than the engine itself so I can feel you for wanting more power to put a quick suspension to full use. Often I can hammer a 270º highway on ramp at enough force to make my passengers and myself feel dizzy after shooting out of apex onto the straight-away. The level of acceleration isn't nearly as impressive as the car's tenacious asphalt gripping abilities!

Don't worry...when a VW Jetta TDI can pull away from you and it takes until 5th gear to gain any ground...you think there are a lot of hidden monsters on the track too

Open back inside the car, sealed back if I take the camera into the ocean (without the car). Took two photos this morning just for you:

John,
you need to post a pic of the helmet mount! :)
Do you use the open back? or the sealed back?

Thanks John! I had it similar for an inside view too. I will see if I can upload. I like the sunroof mount since it seems to see my tachometer better.

I did suction cup to the sunroof glass once (upside down, inside the car) and the results were pretty good. Can't remember why I went back to helmet cam... maybe so I can see which way I'm looking during AutoX... I had a bad habit of not looking all the way across big turns to turn exit, and mounting it on the helmet helps me see if i was looking over or not.

I always thought my head moved around too much and it definitely made me dizzy watching the raw video at 60fps.

My first HPDE. This is at VIR full course. This is a lowdef cut that I made, I'm working on getting a better quality up. This is the last run of the first day. I'll get a vid from the second day up as soon as I can get it cut.

There was a '13 M5 in my run group. I'll try to get a clip of when I was behind it. The guy driving had no confidence in the corners but was dropping the hammer on the straights. The engine was so loud that I was having trouble hearing my engine over it.

nice!! what are you using for capture and editing equipment/software>?

Asiah119

Capture is all through the torque app. I know it's on android, not sure if its on the apple store. The app connects to a odbII reader through bluetooth and, basically, if I have a sensor for it I can set up a meter on the track recorder for it. The recorder lets you select low, medium, high, 720 and 1080 for vid quality. There is an application made by torque that connects to the app on the phone through your home wifi and pulls the video and metadata over and then weaves it all together. The process to pull the data over is slow and clunky, but if you find where it is saving the files, you can plug your phone in to your computer and just copy them over and save yourself some time. For editing I'm using VideoPad. It's not the easiest to use, but it's free, and is letting me change from mp4 to avi (thus changing a 4 gig file into a 400 meg file).

I made some decent progress at the event. Aparently I need to work on not fixating on a point, and get just a little more comfortable with speed. But my instructor did say that he was pretty impressed for this being my first event.

Looks like a very fun track! I will have to take a look into it. Which bluetooth adapter are you using?

Does it have oil temperature as an option? :) Sorry for all the questions, I am more interested in data logging and learning new things.

I just thumbed through the app and I didnt see oil pressure or temp. The app will let you set up a dial for anything that an odb2 could have a reading for. There are a shit ton of options for fuel pressure, and fuel rails, cat temps, o2 sensor voltage, all manner of things that my car doesn't give data for.

It also claims to do roll, and x,y,z accel but I'm not convinced of their accuracy since it is dependent on the acceleratorometers in your phone. There is a accel 'widget' that it wont let me place on the track recorder that is the circle with a dot that moves corresponding to your accel.

Torque reads and clears fault codes too, which is the main reason that I bought it.

I believe that this is the one that I have. Rumors are that the more expensive ones have a better transmit rate.

And VIR is a hell of a lot of fun. They're about do do some work on the track. The flat and uphill esses before and after the bridge are going to be widened at the apexes which some people are quite unhappy about. Rumor is that the track may be trying to bid a NASCAR race soon.

I am also interested in data acquisition that could monitor oil temps and oil pressure, but I have not seen any app or device that can easily get oil temps on the E46 non-M. I think oil temp is just not available via OBD-2, and the oil pressure only goes to the warning light on the dash not to the DME. I think coolant temps are available with the right app, and definitely intake air temps. But to get oil temps and pressure, AFAIK one must install extra sensors, unless you redirect the wires from the existing oil temp and pressure sensors. The E46 M3 might be difference since it displays oil temps on the dash.
