I have made it so post counts do not increase when you post something in the off-topic forum.

Does this also mean that some of us may see our post counts drop from where they were yesterday?

No. It only happens from here on out.

Meanwhile, the overall post count for the site continues to climb even though individual post counts do not climb higher when someone posts in OT. Makes sense.

So then it does me no good to post in the off topic forums anymore so I will quit reading them :biggrin

j/k

I hate when people have 10,000 posts and don't know what they are talking about. I think that post count should be hidden but the rank should be visible. I don't see the purpose to seeing a post count and being knowledgeable does not mean a high post count and vice versa either.

That's true. Post count is most certainly not an indication of knowledge. In fact, I knew a guy with 100,000 posts on a forum I used to frequent. He was a windbag.

Its not something I have ever kept up with. Like if you were to ask what mine is, I would have to look. And I would be surprised. Wow! 600 something. See? Hide em as far as I care.

I do think its pretty cool how you can disable them in a certain forum. The ability to tweak and fine-tune this software never ceases to amaze me!

Well... because they serve no purpose.

Post counts will stay. No need to debate/argue/disagree.

For the record, post counts serve a purpose: as proof that someone has posted a certain amount of times. I think we can all agree on that.

Beyond that, they could -- could -- indicate some kind of knowledge by the poster. But it's on a case by case basis. Jim Cash, a legend over at Roadfly, has a lot of posts. He's one of the more knowledgeable BMW guys I've ever met. His post count supports the idea that a high post count equates to knowledge.

However, I have seen plenty of post whores around the various BMW sites who couldn't think their way out of a paper bag. In those cases, high post counts don't tell you anything, at least with those kinds of people.

So, beyond simply telling us how many posts someone has, who knows what other purpose post counts serve.

I suspect that most of the ZHP Mafia doesn't care one way or the other, so I will just keep them in place. It doesn't require any movement on my part.
