Has anyone used both of these?

I'm tempted to get the Hero, just because I can get it for $218 versus $299.

The only difference I've seen is the low-light. They claim it's sharper glass...but who knows.

Anyone?

Haven't used the hero but +1 for the answer.

Haven't used the Hero, but I do have a Hero2. Have not used it much yet, but imagery seems pretty clear. In 1080p, a ten minute Video is over 1 gig of space! Kinda tough to work with files like that on the web without some compression work. Still pictures are about 10MB each! Also, Hero2 needs Vista or newer OS to work. Just what I have learned in a few shoots. Let me know if you have Hero2 questions.

i have used the hero and hero2. The hero2 has clearer images and video than the Hero. The hero2 has better usable user options on the LCD screen. Also the recording red light is on 4 corners on the Hero 2. This is a great benefit for when you have awkward angles and don't know when its recording from the beeps.

I've been using the Hero2 720p 60fps 170deg wide and been testing it since I just got it yesterday. So far it does look clearer. the menu ease of use is probably enough reason for me to buy the Hero2 lol.

The hero2 has option for external mic, hdmi output. Best part is the HD hero accessories are interchangeable since they are the same size! :)

I have the Hero and my bro has the Hero 2. Night and day difference in the quality. Go with the Hero2 and don't be a Zero.

The first video looks good.. The quality looks great! And your wheels are immaculate! In terms of ideas, I would definitely say to place it somewhere where wind can be battled, as that will ruin all of your videos.

Thanks! I think I might have a cool video to share next weekend. We'll see...

I have the Hero2 and a buddy of mine has the first one. Quality is much cleaner and images crisper. Plus it can do 1080p as opposed to 720.

Original hero has 1080p as well.

Anyways, I picked up a Hero2 awhile ago. Apparently none of you watch my videos ;)

M0nk3y, I watched a few of your AutoX videos! I have the old HD Hero but am so happy with it because I started with the original non-HD Hero (only goes to 360p). Yes the interface is confusing but it's similar to the non-HD hero so I was used to it. There was a Hero 960 model that will shoot in 720p or 960p but does not go up to 1080p. Costco was selling the 960p one a few months ago. I ended up buying the regular HD Hero on eBay around November 2011 but never shoot in full 1080.

In my latest video I was rafting so the camera was on top of my head and extra red LEDs wouldn't have helped me. Had to rely on those next to me to tell me if it was really on or not. Took it surfing recently and I kept taking the helmet off to make sure I had properly switched it on and off.
Here's one of the rafting videos. Be sure to watch it in HD!

I've borrowed my buddies Hero before and it's cool but I am about to buy a Hero2 mainly because of the external mic (pic quality is my second reason). The mic on the camera picks up a ton of wind noise and that really bothers me when I watch videos. With the external mic you can set it up in areas where you can hear the engine much more clearly and I care about that.

Here's an example on a M3 with a mic in the ECU bin:

the best thing is rocking 720p 60fps and external mic!! I need to research a little more on setups for a better trackday videos

The menus are definitely easier to navigate on the Hero2

Derek, I've been wondering that since the input on the Hero2 is stereo maybe getting a 3.5mm stereo to mono splitter from radio shack and running two mono mics. If I was to do that I would put one in the engine bay and one near the exhaust but I just don't know how it would really sound. Otherwise my other idea is putting one in the ECU bin and one in the drug bin for a true stereo sound

I've been looking for something with good sound with tires as well!

This is the only mounting location I got a good sound from my car with the internal mic. I wonder if the sounds will cause clashing with two mics like that?

Keep me updated on the external mic, please.

You can usually get good sound from the engine with the skeleton backplate, but at 70-80 mph it gets washed out

Saw GoPro Hero 2 on sale at Costco for $199+tax but it's the "outdoor adventure" package not the Motorsports package. And I think Costco is carrying them only because now GoPro has the Hero 3!

I should add that the Costco $199 deal is the "Adventure package" with helmet strap mount, headlamp style mount, and WiFi BacPac. I don't think it includes the WiFi remote but includes an app to let popular smartphones act as the camera's WiFi remote.

Anyone tried the Hero3? How does it compare to the Hero2?

Hero3 Black is amazing. Sound quality is much better than the Hero2.

The Hero3 Silver is basically a Hero2. Multiple tests have shown this.

Here is a Hero3 Black on my friends car compared to my Hero2. Similar location:

Hero3 (720p at 120 fps):

Hero2 (1080 at 30 fps):

I just got the Hero3 black. I have used the Hero1 once before. Between these two, the video is night and day, with the Hero3 being much better. One unique feature is the GoPro app. It hooks my smart phone and Hero3 together through WiFi and I can see everything the Hero3 is taping (there's a very small delay though), and adjust all the settings (just as if I was doing it on the camera).

The worst is how big the files are, and they're compressed. So to convert them (in the GoPro software) takes forever. I have a intel i7, which I think is pretty good (I don't know much about computers) and the 17min video I shot in 1440p took over an hour to convert. And you (I) can't really watch the video smoothly before the file is converted.

Video files a huge and i7 is a fast processor, the only thing that may speed up the process, is 64 bit and more ram or throw it out and get a Mac. LOL

Is it possible to get the Hero 3 black to just shoot in 720p or 1080p instead of 1440p and converting it?

Spotted at local Costco warehouses over last few months: GoPro Hero3 Black bundle for $330 + tax. Available on Costco.com are same Hero3 Black bundle or similar Hero3 Silver bundle for $230+tax. Both bundles include frame mount plus waterproof case. Black bundle includes WiFi remote but Silver bundle does not.
