How did you get rid of the crayon smell?

How did you get rid of the crayon smell?

Rip out all the sound insulation that covers the rear shock towers. You have to be thorough, its behind some cables and panels in some places. It comes out pretty easily though. After the lining is all removed, spray some leather/vinyl cleaner in the trunk. The Crayon smell is completely gone on my car now. Did it for my father in law's e46 328i, same result and it still smells great after a few weeks.

Thanks for the info. Had read about the smell coming from glue before.

Is the rear end a little noisier with the insulation removed?

ecyrb
06-02-2012, 11:21 AM
I honestly can't tell a difference in the noise level without that insulation. I drive on the freeway a lot, often over 75mph, and the car sounds the same with the insulation in place.

The crayon smell is gone though and I don't miss it at all.

audio to follow soon, i'm going to ask my wife to record the car on a "closed course"

update: went back to eurocharged this morning, got a re-flash with a file for catless headers. much more mid-range torque, the upper rpm power is noticeably higher, too. butt dyno is somewhat unreliable, however. i'm working to find a weekday to get flashed back to stock for a baseline, then dyno tuned by jerry@eurocharged. i have a feeling that technik headers + custom eurocharged tune will yield pretty nice numbers (for an n/a 3.0L, that is)

dane- the car is way louder, almost too much volume now :S

i'm hoping to get a muffler shop to install an x-pipe or replace one of the resonators with a resontated x-pipe from magnaflow. the tone is great and throaty, but the volume is too much for me (i like a lower profile car, not a hey-look-at-me exhaust note/volume)

Yeah....the other day....in the "what did you do for your E46" thread over at BF.c....Wolf was bragging it up, how he had just overhauled his cooling system....with no leaks or lights. At the end he said "like a Boss"

I quoted him, and said, "Well done. Wolf got his cherry popped"

He deleted my shit pretty quick as the guys started piling on pretty quickly.

Good time...good times.
