View Full Version : Inexpensive header alternative?

JupiterBMW

So I got to thinking, can the M3 header fit our head? Does it mate to our exhaust? Is it different/better?

It would be nice to get some sort of upgrade in this department without (a) breaking the bank and (b) messing around with the SES light...

I did some looking here and on e46f and really only found one thread that never provided any results...

Anyone??

M3 has individual flanges. Need to cut and weld two three-port flanges to each set. The alternative is eBay or Bimmerbrakes.

bimmerbrakes will be releasing their gen 3 headers next month. Eurocharged is working with them to partner up exclusively so hang tight and we'll get you taken care of.

Thanks for the quick reply guys.. Horney's reply basically summed it up. Cut and weld = Not a direct fit... So that answers that question!

I will wait for BimmerBrakes to release... :thumbsup

Will these have cats?

no, catless is planned 1st. Might be a catted option to later follow next year. Part of the reason we are teaming up with them is to be able to code out all the CEL's and such to run a catless set up properly.

As soon as cats are involved is when the money has to start flowing..

I know, but that is also the only way I'll be purchasing a set as my car has to pass emissions tests for inspection.

Yeah, Headers would be cool with me but I wouldn't be able to DD a car without cats. I have a friend with a ZHP the same color as mine (but modded differently) and he has headers with a magnaflow full exhaust after that. Sounds epic, but IMO the sound doesn't portray how fast (or lack there-of) the car actually is. That, and I can't stand driving with him because of the smell. I love the smell on old muscle cars though. Our cars just don't suit that bill.

Exactly, after riding behind Rob at SigFest in his Active ZHP with no cats, I had a headache after about 20 minutes haha. I'd have to have cats if I were to get headers

Yeah, and the 'no-cats' headache is different than any other headache. It also often lasts me the rest of the day and maybe even part of the next..

If you really want cats, have them welded in after the Headers.

I believe NC requires cats to be in the stock location.

Hornung418

How would they know? Honestly, do they pop the hood and get all up in there?

HokieZHP
07-23-2012, 06:01 PM
Car goes up on a lift and they do a visual check. Seeing cats welded on the bottom would be pretty obvious.

Plus, I'd want a clean look if I were to get headers which means I'd want them integrated. I'd want it done right if at all.

Seth, will these be CA legal?

UdubBadger
07-23-2012, 07:46 PM
lol

catless is illegal in all 50 states JP. "off road use only" but thats what all catless headers are. Our coding will make it possible to pass emissions on the ones that only use and OBDII sensor to check pass/fail. Anything else is up to the owner.

Kinda sucks but its really all that can be done with catless.

smell or sound?

smell never got to me in my 135i with catless headers.
if its sound, why not just stay resonated?

I can't tolerate the smell personally. It's more of an issue for those behind the car without cats.

ya i understand. it never seemed too bad on my 1er but I don't know what the M54 is like without them - yet.

Just find a place that doesn't lift the car up or check your window tint....:eeps

With the old car I went to places with an aftermarket high-flo cat with a shorty header and they didn't say anything when they did the visual check.

haha, no I understand that. I should have said do you think the one you mentioned in post #7 with cats (if they make it) will be legal out here

no idea.

I assumed you were talking about the ones you had quoted me describing - catless.

Chances are that if Magnaflow's headers aren't SMOG legal, I highly doubt Anthony's will be either.

Anyone have an idea how loud a stock exhaust with muffler replaced with pipes would sound with catless headers?

Trust us. Resonator delete alone is very loud. Just imagine that plus another 20 dBs.

Will, headers alone make the car VERY growly. My suggestion to you would be get them put on a stock system first and then go from there. You can take off the muffler and see if you like it and if it's too much, you can reinstall or look for another catback system. ZHP exhaust + headers might be the unique sound you want after all. I am going to try it myself.

I've already had the muffler deleted so I was just curious as to whether or not id need to buy a new one if I did headers.

I've heard it. It's not that good... and too loud. Raspy too.

Then the guy went ahead and put a full magnaflow exhaust on.. that was a terrible idea too.

cuz it's loud by itself, let alone with headers.

This. It's also annoying to hear a car that loud being propelled by only ~200-220whp.

Sorry, but I feel very strongly about loud cars that aren't fast. It's just ricey. I still think that there should be a graph...

UdubBadger

yeah maybe but for a car with ONLY 220whp it's quick as heck.
