Please see attached a PowerPoint/PDF document I put together this evening for coding mileage and VIN to a used LCM, useful for replacements and/or upgrades (such as triple blink).

This document has been created as a PowerPoint to make it easy to view on an iPad, as well as a PDF if viewing PowerPoint is an issue.

Seriously, thanks so much! Now, where does one locate this PAsoft/BMW scanner software and tool?? Also, does this mean we can purchase ANY used LCM for triple blink? Or does it have to be a certain year/part #...?

Jon,

This is where I got my BMW scanner (the one BP is currently using for this DIY)

http://www.xcar360.com/bmw-scanner-1-4-0-bmw-scanner-bmw-diagnostic-bmw-scan-tool.html (http://www.xcar360.com/bmw-scanner-1-4-0-bmw-scanner-bmw-diagnostic-bmw-scan-tool.html)

For the price it was worth the risk and I'm glad I got it because it works! :thumbsup Can't beat it for $32.00 :)

LCMs that support the one touch triple blink have to come from an ///M3 years late '05 - '06 with s/w vers 4.0 minimum. Once you have this LCM you can use the BMW scanner (from the link I provided above) and code in the VIN from your BMW and mileage and you should be set. Just follow the DIY BP wrote up and you should have no problems :thumbsup

I will add that I like having the one touch triple blink feature these LCMs come with. Its nice to use when making lane changes while driving on the highway...:thumbsup

I'm not sure if this is an option in PASoft; I'd have to hook it up and check.

You pull out your LCM like this...

http://img.tapatalk.com/c6e4c996-a0ad-f5f4.jpg

There's a label on the top part of the LCM. You unplug your LCM and remove it to get a better look at the label.

The original LCM label plate would probably look like this...

You "nudge" the lane change signal stalk, and it blinks 3 times (triple blink). You don't have to signal, then "un-signal". Very cool, especially when you are accelerating through traffic and want the focus on the road.

This triple blink comes installed on the 4.0 version? Do I need any other further coding if I was purchase a new LCM to make it work like what I have which I think is the 3.5 version? Which ones of the numbers in the LCM plate is the P/N?

Yes, 4.0 haz triple blink capability that you can then activate through coding.

E90/92/93 LCMs don't work on E46 as far as I know Justin. If you got to have an LCM with the most current software then 4.5 will be the most current.

You're probably right regarding newer cars and their LCM software versions though. I never researched newer cars because they don't apply to E46...never cared...

You made a statement regarding that they can only be 4.0 or 4.5. Which is correct for e46s, but not BMW as a whole. So Rando's statement is more correct regarding the model spectrum.

My post was that e85 and newer BMWs came from the factory with triple blink enabled.

johnrando

Justin's comment was:

"Triple blink can be enabled on BMW LCMs 4.0 and later."

That is technically correct.

Charlie's comment that 4.0 and 4.5 are for E46s is technically correct. You cannot use other later s/w LCMs for E46s.

Not really interested in purchasing that part brand new just for one feature :P

Already have rear fogs for tailgaters which is great. If anyone is wondering here are the correct part numbers. I used Charlie's as a reference. So these are all the lcms that are 2006 and newer from realoem. If there isn't one that doesn't line up just state it and I'll remove it from the list. Also I am doing a lot of classwork so I'll pause before I put euro ones up.

I tried doing this based on instructions from a different site. It had everything except the 'change algorithm' step. Now I am getting an error and PASOFT cant read the LCM/FA. The error message states: '$' is not a valid integer value. I'm kind of stuck as the software won't let me do anything to the LCM. Is there any way to resolve this?

Do you guys update the coding on the LCM to reflect the car's VO? I haven't had time to mess with this but it kinda bothers me that the LCM shows the original's car info aka (coupe VO)

http://www.bimmerforums.com/forum/showthread.php?1587004-LCM-and-red-dot&p=21145598#post21145598

- Double click on the LCM
- Reprogramming
- Write odometer (you can fill here a "0" (zero) as milage) It will copy the milage from your Instrument cluster to your LCM
- Write FGSTNR (enter the last 7 digits of your VIN)

If you need to code your LCM to your VO then click "Copy ZCS/FA Coding" I think your brake lights will work then.

That's about it.

Yes, but you'll need an instrument cluster on the bench too. Basically you'd connect power and ground to both modules, connect the OBDII cables K-line to the TXD signal on the instrument cluster, and connect the K-bus of the LCM to the K-bus of the instrument cluster. Then load up PASoft or NCS, and you should be able to talk to both the instrument cluster and the LCM. You can add additional modules by powering them and tapping into the same K-bus signal.

I don't have a diagram, but this is what you'd need to connect:

Cluster (black connector):
Pin 1 = Ground
Pins 4,5,6 = +12v
Pin 14 = K-bus
Pin 25 = TXD -- connected to Pin 7 of OBD2 cable (K-line)

LCM:
Pins 6, 15, 27, 33 = +12v
Pins 31, 32 = Ground
Pin 21 = K-bus

Yes they all have it but you can do some euro options with newer ones or euro ones. Also, if yours goes bad and you get a replacement, then it has to be coded to the car. As a theft deterrent, the VIN is coded into several modules of the car, the LCM is one of them...

I have my original LCM which has 165k miles on it. I swapped in an M3 cluster and have the tamper dot currently.

i used NCS and INPA to resolve my other lights for DSC. I jjust got PASoft and found out and confirmed that im unable to write VIN and or mileage to the IKE. Reset factory default is greyed out since its not a new cluster. I assume thats why you have to swap in a new epprom so that it can be read as a NEW cluster ready for coding from the LCM.

so for now is it possible to edit my LCM to have the VIN and Mileage from the cluster to remove the tamper dot?

i did try it in PASoft and wrote VIN, mileage but still the tamper dot remained.

i read the PDF in the first post and saw that i did not do 1 thing.. I didnt change my algorithm.... when i did it however my PASoft still gave my a successful message.

There's a function within PA Soft that should allow you to copy the VO from the LCM to the IKE. Try that and see if it transfers your VIN and mileage over...

By brand new cluster, you do mean one with zero miles and no VIN coded to it, right? I think that's the only way this would work.

yea I played around with that last night.

I installed my ZHP LCM which has my VIN and correct mileage. i tried using PASoft to sync LCM -----> IKE and it only brought over everything BUT the vin and mileage. the M3 cluster now has all the FA options and shows as a 330i limo/sedan but the VIN and Mileage wont budge.

i thought for sure that the cluster would adopt the mileage since it was LOWER than my original mileage.

i had a matching LCM for the m3 coupe BUT i chose not to use it initially because when I had it installed, my tail lights were all screwy since it was coded for a coupe.

i did not want to change my ZHP LCM since its the only piece left I have with my original options, VIN and mileage so i am keeping it untouched in a drawer in case I need it.

for now i installed the M3 LCM and used PASoft to code the options for Sedan lights and also copy FA from the M3 cluster as well so now M3 cluster and LCM both show as 330i sedan and I have no tamper dot.

I will reach out to terra and see if he has any capacity to do cluster reprogramming for a fee. I have emissions in 7 months and I dont want to go to inspection with a cluster that shows less than 165k miles when the last time I had inspection thats what I had.

sorry to ramble, obviously newbie to this module stuff so still getting over the excitement.

so my question is, can a COUPE LCM be coded to be used in a sedan 100%?

i used PASoft as mentioned above to code an M3 coupe LCM to match my SEDAN LCM parameters

attached is what my LCM settings and HEX values are. i took a screen shot of it and then plugged in the COUPE LCM and changes all the values to match the screen shot.

when i did this and plugged in the coupe LCM, ONE of my rear/passenger right tail lights did not work. the lower right side light. I could not activate it in INPA. when I swapped back in the SEDAN LCM, it worked no problem.

i looked at every value in the COUPE LCM and it matched my screen shot values perfectly.

did i miss something somewhere?

Sedan LCM screen shot of values

sorry to be such a bother, its not a huge deal, im just using my sedan LCM no biggie. i just wanted to know for my own knowledge.

The issue you're having is that the coupe LCM still has the coupe's Vehicle Order (VO). The VO stores the car's "configuration" information, such as the options it has and what bodystyle/market the car is. You need to copy the VO from the old LCM to the new one.
I don't know how you do that through PA Soft - I use NCS Expert for everything. :dunno

I thought I did do that. I copied my FA info from my sedan LCM to the M3 cluster/IKE. and then installed the m3 LCM and copied the FA info from the IKE to the LCM.

so now both M3 LCM and IKE show 330i, limousine with my options below but the VIN and miles at the top show the M3 pieces.

I will dig into NCS Expert as well, maybe theres something HEX wise that PAsoft is not showing that NCS will show.

its just me learning this whole thing out and seeing what I can and cant do.

thanks for the advice!

Not sure if this will be of much help, but if your LCM/IKE are still showing you the M3 VIN (and not your correct sedan VIN), then the FA info would not have copied over correctly.

The VIN actually contains the 'type code' for your vehicle. For instance, my VIN is: WBAEV534X4KM36493. If I go look up my car on RealOEM, I get the type code 'EV53'. You see how 'EV53' is embedded in my VIN? If I lookup a 2004 M3 on RealOEM, I get a different type code.

I think you need to use NCS Expert to make sure the correct VIN is being written to the IKE/LCM before you try to write the FA/VO options.

:dunno

Can you direct me to where I would find out how to do this? I have a 4.5 LCM from an 03 325i to put into my coupe. I'm venturing into deep programming for the first time so forgive me

Looking for help with coding a used replacement LCM. Old LCM and replacement LCM are both version 3.6. I installed the used LCM and was able to configure it so it functioned correctly. I reset the mileage and VIN to match the IKE and now have a tamper dot. I noticed that when resetting the mileage (188395), PA Soft rounds it off to 188300. It appears that the LCM mileage is displayed in increments of 100. I have tried setting mileage to 0 after reading that several people started that the correct mileage would transfer from the IKE. No dice. What am I wrong here? Any suggestions. New to all this so looking some guidance.

Is your VIN and mileage actually saving? If you choose the wrong HW/SW version, it may not retain your VIN and/or mileage information, so when you close and reopen the program, one or both of those items may not have saved.

The mileage (kilometer-age?? lol) does get rounded. The tamper dot comes on when there is a more-than-100km discrepancy between the IKE and the LCM. As long as those two values are within 100km of each other, and as long as the VIN and HW/SW/part number revisions match when you do the coding, it should stick.

When you turn the car off, disconnect the cable and close the program, then turn the car on and re-connect everything, what does it say when you re-read? Does it detect the proper mileage and VIN or did one of them get reset?

VIN and mileage are saving when I shut down and reboot. I tried again, checking to be sure the SW/HW versions are corrrect as well. Actual and LCM mileage are within 5km of each other. I noticed that the vehicle ident screen shows the car as a 330Ci coupe under the IKE and as a 330i and limousine under the LCM. Does this need to be corrected some how?

If you need to code your LCM to your VO then click "Copy ZCS/FA Coding" Choose IKE--->LCM

Is there anybody in the Boston area that has PA Soft 1.4 or similar coding software to rewrite the VIN and milage on my 2005 ZHP. The previous owner of my car evidently installed a used LCM and triggered the tamper dot on the dash. I was going to buy PA Soft myself, but it seems that it only runs on Windows XP or Vista and I am an Mac user.

Any offers of local assistance would be immensely appreciated.

I am in southern CT, if you're willing to make the drive.

And no, the software will run on Windows 10.

BMW Scanner 1.4 (PA Soft 1.4) module and cables are the same, all you need is the correct USB driver for Windows 10.
