well it's a local car, not sure if it was from Cali but my iND guy said he knew the owner so it must've been around here for a while. IIRC the other Rogue car was also in Cali. :dunno

Pretty sure I saw this car for sale last year too. Maybe he finally got tired of trying to sell it and traded it in? Seems crazy to do that though.

It pains me to see a tamper dot on. I could take care of that so quick.........
And I do want that touring, though I'd swap the engines with my sedan and keep THAT as my daily driver. :)

If memory serves, both Rogue cars were built in NJ. That's all I can attest to - I hadn't been following the other car's history; just remembered seeing the Rogue Engineering website showing Terry's ZHP and the blue 323 wagon...

Okay, can't find my notes but here's from memory. I talked to the owner around Thanksgiving time last year, i had a late Jan Business trip to Cali lined up and wanted to see & drive it, it had been on the market for $22-24K. He was Orange County, CA based and had several (maybe 4) other BMWs. The conversion was started in 2008 in Nc or TN and the Cali guy bought it unfinished for $10-12Kin 2010. It kind of looked like it does today but many things were not hooked up. The closer it got to my visit, the more unfinished items were revealed. The heated seats weren't hooked up, the dash and gauges had some issues, the a/c/heat system had issues, he added the M3 lack of spare tire mod but that was about it. It became apparent that he didn't work on the car himself, it was killing him on repair bills to get it correct. He said the car ran like a scalded ape until another light came on and necessitated another trip to the shop.

Like I said, he was asking low $20's around Xmas. I started talking to him for the 3rd time and the price dropped to $18K when isaid I'd be in SoCal within 2 weeks, I offered him $15K subject to my inspection and drive. He countered with $16.5K, said he had it on EBay at the time for $18-20K. We settled on $16.5K with him paying transport back to the east coast (essentially the same $15K I offered him) subject to my drive. Then made my trip and his previous offer to drive it to me evaporated. My offer to drive 100 miles to see it was limited by very small windows of opportunity, he wanted an unseen purchase. Further revelations of minor electrical issues to be resolved and I decided it was a no-go, didn't make the drive to see/drive it.

So it's moved from Cali to Chicago, I suspect he advertised it again on EBay with a no reserve and spmeome near Chicago bought it only to find out it has unresolved issues. That person then probably traded it into the local VW dealer, and now you see it.

Family, it looks intoxicating, I was smitten, please tread lightly and carefully with this one.

And the earlier references, this is NOT one of the original Rogue cars, it's a copy that started out correctly but never got finished.

Bruce

:jawdrop :drool Doooooooo waaaaaant!

But thanks for the inside scoop, Bruce; I shot the dealer an email (via Cars.com) asking about the car's current state re:the conversion.

This is seriously the first time I've really been considering selling / trading my ZHP . . .

So I've been speaking with a sales consultant at the VW dealership, asking him about various things about this beautiful wagon:

Hey Travis,

I looked over the wagon. The heated seats are not working like you said. Other then [that] I tried the sunroof, windows, mirrors, radio, and more and didn't find anything else inoperable. Let me know if there is anything in specific you want me to check out. Thanks

He's currently going to be snapping a picture of the instrument cluster for me (to see if any warning lights are lit) & looking into if there are any errors thrown when read out by a GT1.

That said, it looks like my Wisdom In Financial Efforts officer (i.e. "WIFE") is putting a pretty firm veto on my acquiring this car – though I haven't written it off 100% yet – so is there anything else anyone in the Family would like me to ask Omar about this unique specimen while I have his ear?

Damn this car is starting to make its rounds, I have a feeling we'll be seeing this one advertised at various places until a dealer unloads it for a reasonable price to someone who can finally finish up. If anyone on here is truly interested in buying I would suggest having a thorough PPI done by a competent BMW mechanic. Like Bruce mentions above this car had a few electrical gremlins among other things that needed to be worked out to be 100%. If you have the time and means then this would be a solid pickup. I had a friend that was in contact with the PO when he had it advertised on E46 but it never solidified into a sale.

Bad part here is, the guy who started the conversion as well as the PO are no longer accessible. You're taking a crap shot in the dark that you'll be able to figure out the gremlins on this one. You either have to have an awful lot of patience or a very fat wallet, maybe both.

Did you ever go take a look at this wagon, Seth? I've still been having dreams about this car & finally got the wife to relent on me selling my ZHP for it, I'd just like some good, reliable intel on its condition before even starting to sell the ZHP.

I'll be in the Great Lakes area next month to see family, & a trip to Chicago wouldn't be out of the question . . .

Believe me, I've read & re-read Bruce's post & thought about what all could be wrong. I think I'd be up for it, though (depending on exactly what those issues turn out to be, of course). I have actually been considering ZHP-ifying a wagon lately, & I just kept coming back to this (seemingly) 90%-complete M3 wagon: it seems like it could be 110% of the payoff for (potentially) far less work. <fingers crossed>

Crickett,
Maybe another option for consideration. Somewhere on here there's a post with photos of my old wagon, 2002 325iT that was ZHP-ized and Dinan. ZHP front bumper, wheels, steering wheel, shift knob, side skirts, window trim, etc. Dinan exhaust, throttle body, software 2, wheels (had 2 sets, I sold one set and kept the other), strut bar. It's AW, black leather, sunroof delete, 5 spd, sport & cold weather packages, VDO gauges in lieu of sunglass tray. I was the 2nd owner, added the ZHP wheels & new tires, brembo slotted rotors, ceramics, & SS lines. I offered it to Dane for less than I had in it (DW why didn't you buy it?), listed it for $13.5K and 2 guys fought over it pushing the selling price up a grand. Sold it a year ago with 56K miles, the guy who bought it lives in Baltimore. He's trying to buy a house before next summer, said he might have to sell it. He's added factory xenons, tinted it all around, changed all fluids, and put just under 10K miles on it. He wants exactly what he paid for it, $14.5K.

I've considered it but I know I wouldn't accept it as is and a ZHP engine & trans or S54 combo would end up on my to do list. But we have one in college, another one headed that way in 2 years, so can't justify spending that kind of money on my hobby right now. My only bitch with the car is the stock rear end with a 3.46 ratio in combo with that 5 spd had it turning nearly 4K rpms at 80 mph, it badly wants a 6th gear IMO. Can't change the rear cause that 3.46 launches very nicely, makes it feel more spirited than a 2.5 should.

If you're set on a M3 swap, here is a perfect candidate to drive and enjoy for a while as you assemble the swap package.
Bruce

Sooo . . . due to a fluid & should-have-been-anticipated financial situation (I mean, it's the friggin' holidays :facepalm), my plan to quickly acquire this wagon has been deferred to post-holidays reconsideration. Yes, it was the wife who brought up the financial issue, & yes I was very disappointed & upset for a bit, but I agreed with the logic & (eventually) agreed with the decision to delay the purchase of a new vehicle until (at least) a month or so past the holidays.

I'm really hoping that the wagon is still available then, & am encouraged by it's relatively long time on the market! Bring on 2013!!

I really doubt it will go anywhere. What you could do is open talks with the dealer now, let it languish, and come back and try to pick it up with a stink bid. That thing is killing them and the definitely want it off the lot and out the door at this point.
