View Full Version : Designers- nice comparison of coupes vs sedans

I just found this link... My apologies if it's been posted before, or if the owners are anyone here (although since it's in a public forum...)... But as a designer I am ADDICTED to these kinds of comparisons that discuss the car in terms of aesthetics. Not performance (per se, there is a small discussion that surfaces), just design issues. LOVE IT.

It reminds me of my "Apple Design" book, which discusses the history of the company in terms of the designs and politics of design, as opposed to the people per say, or other history of the company. Just the form factors.

Very good unbiased comparison here from the coupe and sedan owners. Some good images as well.

Sorry if this in the wrong forum.

nice Dane.

Im wondering if anyone has done a literal side by side photoshoot... font, r side, l side, rear, overhead, oblique angles.. etc... of the two to show the comparisons?

my obsession......

I should. :)
All I need is a sedan near me (pref TiAg, so the comparison is direct)...

Any takers?

Unmodded, of course.

Gee, if only there was a superlative photographer (who happened to be a founding member) in the SoCal area that takes stunning photographs.......... ;)

I don't think he likes shooting cars

Casey is the car guy. I can shoot cars just fine; just not something I get any joy from. That's why I don't shoot them for fun.

That said, I would not turn down a well-paying gig to shoot cars.

understood. Relates to design projects very closely. The measures of JOY and PAYMENT are often on opposites ends of the scale.

I can always shoot, with my iPhone, probably good enough to do an analysis. But I'll still need a silver sedan near me.

This, of course, is predicated by the assumption than somebody other than me would find a direct side by side, blow by blow comparison intriguing.

Reminded often that not everyone is as geeky when it comes to "form" as I...

do both cars have to be same color?

do both cars have to be same color?

Good question.

Technically, no.

However... Form may read quite differently on different colors, because of how reflectivity and shadow begat nuances in curvatures.

I'd say that at least they should be similar in order for the comparison to be less subjective.

My preference would be to remove any data that would cloud a direct "one to one" comparison.

Nothing to blush about, I just have a ton of respect for detail oriented people who work in the creative industry.

I know, I was being coy

As do I. It's why I am drawn to the imagery and composition in the photography.

When discussing aesthetics, one cannot leave out the details of the details.
The car is a collection of details.... Either successful in their ensemble and transformations.... Or not.
The ZHP, IMO, as does the E46 in general ( only not as much as our vehicles), is a classic collection of transitional surfaces and massing.

I had an architecture professor in undergrad that used to provoke the students by getting them to think of the building as "one big detail"..,,. It really changes the way one perceives formalism.

Webster-

Different address, but exact same photos that were linked on my original post!

Good to see that the info is making its rounds, regardless of the clothes it's wearing.

I look at this very close but different resemblance every day. Her's is not a ZHP but, aside from that there are many significant difference between the 4 door saloon and the cabriolet or cabrio and coupe. I have great respect for the designers that were able to pull off quick recognition of the of these sisters but NOT identical twins.

Agreed
I'm always fascinated how auto designers have to/ can pull off design cues that are in the same "voice", but with different "accents" between coupes, sedans, and convertibles of the same line/"song"

Then there's always the familie desig language across the boards of different brands (BMW's kidney grilles, the Hofmeister Kink, etc) that are common yet different to all cars in a given brand.

Exciting stuff for the gray matter and the ocular orbs!

True. I think its a "as close as we can get" scenario. Should be some great options next week.
