Car is paid off - May 6, 2016

I've been talking about doing my ///M project thread for quite some time now and have finally written it using my ZHP project as the inspiration so here goes…;)

I got my second BMW and car that I realized I could easily obtain for my "realistic dream car", this 2004 TiAg ///M3, in April 2009. It started out by someone I knew in Connecticut asking me to test drive a 330cic since I was going to be in Newport so I agreed. I stopped by BMW of Newport where the car was supposed to be and asked them if they had this car and was told that the car had already sold. I then spotted my future ///M in the back lot sitting all by itself and impulsively asked the sales rep if I could test drive the ///M before reason could take over. He agreed and off I went…:) Coming from my 323i I was immediately impressed by everything about this car…all the little details and performance… this car nailed it for me with exception of the interior color - Grey. I then thanked the sales person and left.

Several days later I decided to stop by again to see if I could test drive the ///M again….yes, the power bug was biting on me real hard…got my speed/power fix and then left again. This time the same sales person asked me if I was interested in purchasing the car and I told him I was not looking to buy a second BMW. Anyway I ended up taking my ///M out for a third test drive and knew that I had to have this car….in the process, I violated everything I knew about buying a used BMW….no pre-purchase inspection. When I talked to the same sales person about purchasing the ///M he looked at my 323i and I told him I wasn't going to be trading in my 323i, that the ///M would be another acquisition in addition to my 323i. He looked surprised and I ended up buying the ///M. What clinched the deal was that the dealership added a 5-year wheel and tire warranty and with the wonderful roads here in New England, it made sense to have this for the ///M.

So here I am, the third owner of my dream car which retailed for $56,195.00 brand new. I got the car for under 50% of the original value with a CPO warranty and was a happy camper…:biggrin Being a used car, there were several issues that I did not care for and knew that there will be many projects in the future before I am truly happy with my ///M. Like my ZHP project thread here are a few pics of the ///M after I had purchased it in 2009.

The ///M at the time of purchase had the following:

2004 BMW ///M3 - build date October 2003
TiAg / Grey Nappa Leather Interior
6-Speed Manual Transmission
Navigation
Cold Weather Package
BMW Assist

https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190902/44a092a388e6fbba886312f39c229622.jpg

Mileage at time of purchase: 74,140 miles

My purchase price: $25,720.00

Lots of potential for my next project car! :thumbsup My M3 how it looked back in 2009 after my purchase . . .

The car did not have any maintenance history associated with it, however, when I informed the service manager that I was purchasing the ///M, I gave them the VIN and they gave the car a thorough look over and did the research to determine the car's maintenance history. Luckily for me, the ///M has been dealer serviced it's entire life and I was assured that I was purchasing a car with a very good maintenance history. I was much more relieved when I heard this and felt relatively at ease with my purchase…:)

This is how my M3 currently stands today . . . in 2024

Looking below at my mod list you can see I have done a lot to my M3 to make it stand out among other “stock” M3’s and it shows. I have said this before and those who have personally seen my M3 will agree my M3 is far from stock (OEM+). I will add that I’m not even close to finishing and still have more I want to accomplish on this amazing car[emoji57][emoji41]

On to the list of mods by pics [emoji4]

One of the first mods I did was to get laminate film to cover my headlights, corner lights, and tails…and my color matched corner reflectors (the yellow had to go)
I also got rid of he hideous front license plate bracket in favor of the Skene designs custom license plate bracket. :thumbsup

https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4357/36680312065_942cbcdfbd_b.jpg

Next came the Hamann fog light covers (you can see the Skene designs license plate bracket in this pic) [emoji4]
https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4363/36633958256_93469464c9_b.jpg

Somewhere in-between during a trip down to Manassas, VA… I decided to tint my windows and had it done there however a wonderful State Trooper here at the local barracks had something to say about it and I had to remove it after having it on for 4 years... Funny how other Troopers told me not to worry about it since it was not too dark... anyway rather than go thru more BS from this one trooper in particular I just removed it until the day comes when I move to a state that does allow window tint. This was my M3 while I had 35% window tint...

https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4366/36510941012_76776a6768_b.jpg

Then my friend Anthony told me that blacked out grills/side grills would really have my car pop out….glad I listened to him! :thumbsup
https://c3.staticflickr.com/2/1635/26143303554_f89d107288_o.jpg

While I blacked out the grills, I managed to get a set of monochrome ///M3 badges [emoji4] The ARC-8s in this pic came from my friend Brian :drevil
https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4483/37595556626_cb73f6469f_b.jpg

When I used to have VMR VB3 CSL reps in hyper blacks mounted on my M3...

The Strassentech Style front lip to clean up the front end...
https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4410/36680277365_ba1a1a7a5a_k.jpg

Another detail-related accent I chose for my M3 was to insert TiAg internal headlight trim pieces taken from a 330ci. They add just enough to make my ///M different from the others :drevil
https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4344/36633957986_2fa66c8847_b.jpg

Next came the double-walled tail pipe tips since I am okay with the stock exhaust for the time being…
https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4338/36680278415_e433e34434_b.jpg

I had installed the BMW Performance SSK and a lit F10 shift knob (courtesy of Tony - tnhl1969)… easily the best lit knob you can find in my opinion…glad to have this [emoji4]
https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4483/37386192470_fdd64f2614_b.jpg

It was also time to replace my Scorza full carbon fiber CSL boot lid with something authentic so I got an OEM CSL boot lid from a good friend of mine. [emoji4]

https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4379/36633916976_555658afff_k.jpg
The Scorza CSL Rep bootlid was a very nice bootlid I enjoyed having then I sold it to Sean when I was able to source my OEM CSL bootlid...

https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4510/37612286282_67b4e63002_h.jpg
To me, nothing beats the fitment and look of OEM CSL....
https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4503/37595759336_fd1eba2679_b.jpg
https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4468/37612286402_0fd7e7a78f_b.jpg
The car looks so right with the CSL bootlid installed. Really changes the look of the car! :thumbsup

Then in May of 2012 I picked up a much needed daily driver…a 2003 ZHP to share the garage with the ///M. The ///M had a family again! :wub

https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4353/36680278095_350bc84ea6_b.jpg

Now I had to share mod duties between both cars….for the past year, most of the mod duties have been going to my ZHP as it will assume 100% of the daily driving duties as well as winter driving…I had lots of TLC to put back into my new baby and it shows…;)

The interior with grey seats and dash before I removed them...
https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4341/36633958416_259d5a76f4_b.jpg

Next was to change out my complete interior as I really hated the all grey color.....
https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4489/36973351323_6fe225a413_b.jpg
I mean everything inside that was that puke grey color went out!!
https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4505/36973351133_2c9b182d9a_b.jpg
https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4479/23791314168_86b8f2079c_b.jpg
In with the black carpeting...
https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4459/36973351113_677604251a_b.jpg
The complete interior swap took me one day to accomplish much to Botond's surprise!

Now the interior is starting to look proper for my tastes....
https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4451/23791339768_105a699a62_b.jpg

Added the OEM CSL door panels.... those are very hard to source and they are expensive!!!

Thanks guys! It's been a long time coming...I've been meaning to start this thread but have been keeping this thread sidelined because of other projects going on.

Since some of my progress for the ///M have started creeping into my ZHP project's thread, I felt it was time to put this thread out :thumbsup

I feel very fortunate to own two very special, and well maintained BMWs [emoji6] BP has had the most "behind the wheel" time on my ///M, he can chime in [emoji6]

@JP...I know you have been waiting patiently for this....I hope I don't disappoint [emoji4]

@ Jon...the ///M did get a facelift but the changes/refreshes were not as noticeable as they were for non-///M's. Looking at the boot, facelift ///M's trunk handle extend out beyond the license plate indent, and they got the LED tails from the factory. There may be other updates but they are probably under the hood so to speak....the front end was kept because of the more aggressive look compared to the non-M "facelift" look but there will be those who disagree...

Pre-facelift style - note early style tail lights as well...(trunk handle does not extend past license plate indent)

Facelift style - w/ extended trunk handle and LED tails

Derek, these are the 60-LED 6000k angel eyes. I'm about to get a new "whiter" set over the winter. These are bluer than what I want....getting too many looks by the LEOs with these.....

In the future I plan to do the following for the ///M :)

- change out the current two tone dash for an all black dash
- change out the grey carpeting for an all black carpeting
- change out my rear deck from grey to OEM black

This will complete my change over from grey interior to black...:thumbsup

Just read through it all.

Really awesome mods. Great example of an ///M modded right!!

Saw this car in person and it definitely caught my eye. It look great and I'm sure it performs just as well as it looks. Keep the mods comin'!

Have you considered boosting it?

Dzenan,

Yeah, I'm trying to keep everything clean and appreciate all the feedbacks/complements :thumbsup

Now, when am I going to see yours? Perhaps you should plan to go to SIGFest2013 with your ///M....I'm bringing mine this time ;)

As for boosting it....I'll be looking to supercharge my ///M after my daughter is finished with her college....sort of a treat to myself afterwards ;)

The ///M is now on the most part staying in the garage in storage status. I will occasionally take the ///M out for a spin only when the roads are very clean and salt-free just to get oils moved throughout and car warmed up to normal operating temperature. Then it will go back into it's home...keeping the gas tank full during this time...

A few things I have on my agenda for the ///M are:

- Install my First Aid Box (happening this weekend)
- swap out the Bosche lens for the ZKW lens I have (over the winter)
- replace my windshield (early spring)
- get new rear tires (early spring)
- replace my radiator before leaving for SIGFest2013

That's pretty much all I have to do and I should be ready for SIGFest2013 :thumbsup

You know you're a car enthusiasts when you mod in memory of your loved ones. I'm very excited to hear you're going to super charge the ///M. We're going to need to get you to the Performance Center sooner than later, now!

I like the wheels you've picked out, but honestly, I love the set that's on it. And you know I mean it, because I love black wheels but I'm trying to discourage you. I support any decision you make and she'll look great in any shoes, but I dunno.......

I love brake upgrades. Speed's wonderful, but stopping is life or death! The ///M already had good stopping power so the upgrade should feel excellent!

Thanks Derek and Ry!

I do like the VMR VB3 CSL reps that are currently on my car but the problem is that the 19x10s aren't available and I was told by VMR that they don't know when these wheels will be available. I've always loved the BBS CH-Rs with the black edition, so it seems that this will really complement my car. I should see lots of concave with the rear 19x10.5's :thumbsup

Ry, you know I do things right regarding my ///M so I'm sure when you see her next time she won't disappoint...:) Supercharger won't happen until sometime later in summer if all things work out regarding selling of my parent's home. Lots of work to accomplish...:)

With all this happening...I may have to set aside some cash so that I can come down later to the Performance Center with a group of fellow enthusiasts to have fun.....hmmmmm! What a nice thought Ry :biggrin

Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Derek, I did look at a set of Apex Arc-8s a friend of mine has but after thinking about things... I really want to get the BBS CH-Rs. I really love the styling and with the black edition, I think this set will really look awesome on my TiAg ///M. So for me, it's BBS or nothing.

I would have preferred to keep my VMR VB3s on the ///M as I love the CSL styling but after discussions with VMR (looking for more concave in the back), they told me that they don't know when they will have a set of 19x10's available and that's what I would get to keep my VMRs on. Since there's no set date as to when VMR will have these available, it's BBS for me. :thumbsup

Perhaps I should take a look at my already hectic modding schedule and throttle it down abit...as Dane eloquently stated, pace myself...;) What do you think?

johnrando
01-14-2013, 07:30 AM
Tough call Charlie. While there is technically no reason to pace yourself, perhaps with so much to do you might enjoy the mods more if you give yourself more time to let each one or two to soak in on their own and then add more. Probably more enjoyable and less stress due to time. Either way it's going to be fun for you, and we'll live vicariously through your mods.

Full leather, heated, and carbon fiber back shell. That's what drives the pricing. If I'm going this far I just couldn't see saving $300/seat just to have vinyl so I'm getting full leather instead...

Devlin, when I started both project threads... it wasn't my intention to make anyone jealous. It was my hopes to inspire others into modding their cars.

I have to admit that in the past 8 months, I have been very lucky finding my mod items at a considerable savings. For me it was the chase to find items such as the BMW Performance carbon fiber strut brace that contributed to my mission of modding.

I have gotten many wonderful comments and support but have never seen anyone pointing me out as the reason for their modding. At first I didn't know how to take it but after thinking about it and knowing that the comment came from a friend, I took it as a sincere form of flattery.

My goal is to contribute to this wonderful forum and to help others when I can. Sorry for being long-winded in my response Devlin.

I paid a bit more for my Bride seats.

I do like the leather but from a track point of view, leather isn't the way to go.

The current plan is not to track the ///M. The goal is to have an awesome highway cruiser with both looks and performance as I like to take the ///M on long road trips.

You're right jayjay... modding both my BMWs does give me joy and happiness. Like I just texted John, it's my cross to bear :) The mod bug has bitten me really hard and it's too hard to stop, especially when you come across such good deals (Sprint Booster, BMW Performance CF strut bar, MTec II CF rear diffuser.....the list goes on and on) :)

Okay since everyone has told me that I'm being blamed in a good way then let's do it and have fun together...:thumbsup Resuming the quest for more mod/performance parts!

Last thing I ever want to do is offend anyone regarding my two projects...

No desire to even attend a track event ?

I have never tracked any of my cars and honestly, I want to start with my ZHP. Once I get used to tracking, then perhaps someday I will take the ///M out to the track. Problem is that my biggest fear is wrecking my beauties after all the work I have put into them. That's probably the biggest issue I have to overcome right now is the possibility of wrecking either car while at the track....not an option....

Plenty of options out there. Here in VA, summit point raceway hosts Friday at the track for people that want to get on an actual track.

Other option is autocross. Lol.

Autocross is a good start.

A lot of people comment that autocross skill doesn't transfer over to the track, and it really doesn't. However, it does teach one thing....car control.

Once you know where the limit of the car is, how to notice it, pass it, and then catch it. You'll be fine on the track. The only time I was on the track was when it was a cold, wet day at Mid-Ohio. Sealed pavement with RS3s (who hate cold) doesn't turn to a good day. Anyways, there were a lot of instances where I stepped on the gas too early and started bringing the rear around. The instructor was really amazed at how quick I caught each rear-step out with correction, and said I had "The fastest hands he has seen in awhile"

Trust me, if you saw how many times I've spun my car...you'd think I just started driving.

cakM3
01-30-2013, 11:22 AM
Kyle, I was thinking the same thing by doing autocross first and "learn" my car....then after I have gotten used to pushing my car, try the track...:)

Stuart, I haven't found too much but honestly, haven't started. I'm trying to catch up on my college assignments at the moment. Either way, I will still opt for the optional carbon optic back shell. It appears that the back shell is not true carbon fiber but will add a nicer appearance than the standard plastic shell. Eventually, knowing me, I will locate real carbon fiber backshells and yes, I will get them and have them installed...;)

Since I'm now going on 3 solid weeks of being furloughed....which sucks by the way :)... I have decided to wait on the BBS and get a fresh set of VMRs instead but with 19x10's in the rear... so pretty much staying with the current look regarding wheels.

http://i395.photobucket.com/albums/pp37/macdctr/Library2/ScreenShot2013-02-04at83022PM_zpsb93e3f72.png

Still considering getting my Recaro Sportster CS (full leather/heat) seats though. I plan to put an order hopefully by this upcoming weekend (but may go another route still yet!)... :shift

By going this route...I will be able to do more "fun" things to my ///M in preparation for the reunion meet...:)

I priced these seats today and am seriously considering getting these so please, someone talk me out of doing so.....please!!! :)

Wow. First of all, the wheels look great. As for the seats, the Ricaro's being almost a grand cheaper and great seats in their own right, it would make sense TO ME to get them and have the extra $$ for something else. Of course it's your choice and those BMW seats look so sweet. Can they both take the c/f backing?

What I like about the BMW Performance seats is that they are from BMW Performance Group and they are very hard to get over here.... What has my interest is the black leather/black alcantara combination. If I were to get the Recaro Sportster CS, they do not come in black leather/black alcantara.... Well, we'll see which route I decide to go...:)

Charlie, I think that price is waaay too much. I could never justify purchasing seats like that.

Nonetheless, those are bad ass seats, and if I was loaded, those would be the ones.

I'd probably go with some basic Recaros for 600-900 each, but it's up to you.

Derek, possibly and most likely will be cheaper but still won't be the same. I am not sure yet but am leaning seriously on getting these seats.....

As for wheels, going for something very different than my current setup. Eventually I will get my BBS CH-Rs but at the moment with my current job situation....will wait till later this year before getting them... still, I think it will look good with what I'm planning.....more to come ;)

Sure Derek if you want to shell out $1,490.82 more than what I'll be shelling out for the BMW Performance seats....that's okay... Those seats are retailing for $6,985.82 if you can source them. I'll be happy with the BMW Performance seats....:thumbsup Go ahead! You can rock the OEM M3 CSL seats while I rock the BMW Performance seats...:)
