View Full Version : Dice Media Mic issues

So as I assumed might happen I am having issues with reception of the mic for my media bridge.

Currently I have it mounted in the stock location which is great cosmetically but functionality is not very good.

One idea I had was to wire an OEM Mic up to the dice wiring. Any one who is experienced in electronics see a problem with this?

Given I will get an OEM plug or just cut the one out that is already in my headliner.

Thanks

I too would be interesting in this. I was thinking of upgrading my DICE Silverline Duo to the Media bridge and I have an OEM mic. I wanted to entertain the same exact idea! I would get an OEM plug to splice into the DICE wiring. That way your OEM mic will still have a connector. :D

Yep I do planning on the OEM plug. I'm gonna talk to my Indy to see if he has an OEM mic lying around so I can at least test proof of concept.

Btw so far I totally recommend the media bridge if you do choose to upgrade.

Interested in upgrading mine as well, and using the OEM mic. Let us know what you find out. With my old one, you could choose to control it via the ipod or the car stereo, does this have that feature?

Yep I can control it from both. even the steering wheel.

Just found an OEM mic on eBay that comes with the plug and some of the wiring from the vehicles side of things so it should be an easy install.

Will report back.

What kind of plug does the BMW mic have? I have the parrot kit, and am having trouble with my mic reception in the stock location. It has a 1/8" mini jack.

Thanks

Its a proprietary bmw plug. I will try and snap a pic in the day light tomorrow.

Ok, just got my OEM Mic in the mail.

6527

It has a bit of the oem wiring as well as the oem plug.

Now comes the part where I need assistance from some people with wiring experience. I have no problem doing the actual wiring but what I want to figure out is what each wire is before I start cutting things up.

Currently the mic has 2 black and 1 yellow wire coming out of it.

I will consult the good book of Bentley and report back.

Ok, here is the diagram that I found in the Bentley but it looks like it only shows 2 wires going into the mic not 3.

Ok so my friend brought up an interesting point.

Since I believe out cars run off a CANBUS does that mean that the oem Mic will not work of hooked up to the dice system?

Any one have experience with the canbus system?

**UPDATE**

Ok so from what I have been able to figure out it looks like the OEM mic will not work with the DICE.

But I believe I have found a way to make the DICE mic work much better.

I have one more adjustment I want to make then I will add pics to this thread as well as make a DIY.

I know its pointless with out pictures or more details but I kept forgetting to mention that I realized the OEM mic wont work so when I thought of it earlier I wanted to mention it before I forgot again.

More will come tomorrow.

Ok so here are some pictures and more details.

6706
6707
6708

Step 1

So after realizing that the OEM Mic will not work I played around with different mounting locations. The best that I have found so far is shown in the pictures above.

At the front of the OEM mic grill is the clip the holds the OEM mic in place. (Pic 1) the mounting point of the Dice mic (pic 2) is pliable enough to fit over the mount clip for the OEM mic. (Pic 3)

So far this has made a large improvement in sound quality but I am still not pleased since when on the highway I still need to raise my voice slightly from time to time depending on wind noise.

Step 2

Step two which is currently in process is to add some 1 inch silicon tubing around the mic so that it creates a dome if you will. My hope is that this will allow only sound from inside the cabin to reach the mic and block wind noise from the other side.

Once the glue is dry I will add those pictures

I'm in for how this works out.
I'm closing in on a 330Cic and have noted that from 9/03 on they relocated the mic to the top of the steering column. Obviously the verts have their own unique situation but it might be worth exploring a similar location.

I actually gave up on step 2 as it muffled my voice some what.

Obviously a vert is different but for me step 1 has worked fine.

William and I located my Parrot mic to where the OEM mic was on the vert steering column. Works much better and it was very straightforward.
