Hey Guys

Figured I would start my project thread so I could post updates.

*Saving Space for Expanded Story*

The car needs a little TLC. Super happy with it so far though. It makes a perfect daily driver and a great compliment to my Corvette. I love having two cars that I am excited to drive.

Specs: Imola/Alcantara. CW Package. Silver Cube Trim.
Pick up mileage: 94100

Mods on the car already
18" OZ Superleggera Wheels w/ 245 square setup
UUC Adjustable Sway Bars
M3 Fuel Baffle
BMW Performance Grills
Aux Input
M3 Dead pedal
Aluminum Ebrake Handle
Aluminum gas pedal

My Progress:

Got a checkup: Car is in pretty good shape. Will need fcabs and some other odds and ends typical of it's age.

UUC Steel Weighted Shift Knob- This was in my old M3 when I bought it. Ironically, I switched it out for a zhp knob. Now that I bought a zhp, I did the opposite.

Needs
Front Passenger Mirror Cover (Waiting for paint)

I would recommend changing out both belts. (you mentioned you need the man drive belt), the a/c belt needs to come off for the main belt to come off!

Yeah, it's probably a good idea. The drive belt looks awful. The ac belt doesn't look like it has any wear right now.

Thanks. I prefer bbs style, but these have really grown on me. I had a TiAg. Here is my thread on m3 forum. http://www.m3forum.net/m3forum/showthread.php?t=383017 See below copied over from the intro thread too.

Hello everyone,

I'm glad to be a member here. Forums are great. I would like to share my story with you guys.

Side Note:I am planning on saving some of the ZHP stuff for the project thread.

My name is Cam. I'm a mechanical engineer in Atlanta. Huge car guy. About a year and a half ago I got one of my dream cars. An e46 M3. Low mileage. Great condition. I loved the car. Not exactly what I wanted color wise, but I got a good deal. Drove it for 9 months. Put 11k miles on the car. Ended up spending about 5 grand on "regular maintenance." Inspection 2. Rtabs and fcabs. Tires. I was so frustrated. Listed the car for 5k more than I bought it for even though I had no real intention on selling it. Someone bought it for my asking price. I figured that was great. When else are you going to break even on a car that you drove for a year? So I set about searching for another M3, but in the color combo I wanted.

Stay tuned for Part 2: Corvette.

The original owner tracked it once a year. I may take it out some. The Corvette will probably get track duty though. In all fairness, this is probably a better car for me to learn on since I'm still pretty green.

Thanks. Eh, it's on the list. I'll get around to it after I take care of maintenance. The corvette will probably get most of the mod attention.

Update. I checked my rear swaybar. I thought it needed adjustment since it is in contact with the axle on the lift. Turns out, it sits perfectly when the suspension is loaded. I wonder if anyone else has noticed that?

I will probably be dropping off the ZHP Thursday to fix the driver seat, and get the front bumper resprayed. The week away should give me time to catch up on the Corvette. I have plenty of projects for it. Test fitted the car cover today. Perfect fitment. I have new c6z shocks, headlight gears, hids, and bumper lettering sitting in my living room to put in.

So I had some good moments and some bad moments over the weekend.

The good:
Front plate trim deleted
Tranny Fluid Flush
New Belts
PS Fluid flush

The Bad:
I tried to take out the coolant temp sensor. Pretty sure I broke it. Got a piece out but couldn't get the whole thing. Managed to get it back in without it leaking any more than before. It is really tough to grip a piece of plastic that is leaking coolant. I will monitor it and order a new sensor...

Yeah, that temp sensor was a PITA to get out. I had to tie a string around it to hold those clips in, and then spent another twenty mins trying to gently wiggle it out. Finally got it and replaced the seal without any incident. I actually had no coolant leakage, so that was good.

Hmm. That string thing may be worth trying. It's a slow leak. I maybe have to top it off once a month. I could probably just wait until I'm ready to do the whole cooling system.

No updates on the respray or driver recover. Going to wait until after all of the holiday travel. Next up: Fcabs and Brakes. I thought I had an oil filter housing gasket leak. I cleaned off everything underneath a few weeks ago. Still looks clean and my oil level is good. :thumbsup

In honor of Charlie, I'm putting up my pre-reunion checklist
(Dad christmas present)
-Respray front bumper/hood chips
-Paint/Install side mirror cover
-Recover driver seat bolsters
-Scratch/dent removal?
-small interior fixes (repaint cup holders and maybe scratched silver cube trim)
------------------------------
My own ZHP:
-Paint front bumper grill
-Install splitters
-Clear bra
-fuel filter
-Brakes
-CDV Removal
-diagnos/fix secondary air system
-Touch up splitters

If I end up selling the corvette: (Thinking about putting the money towards a house)
-AEs
-Clears all around
-OEM Bluetooth
-Strut Tower Brace
-New alcantara shift boot, ebrake boot, and armrest
-Front differential bushing?
-Cooling system refresh?

To do for the corvette before summer:
-Install C6 Z06 Shocks/
-Lower car on stock bolts
-Alignment
-Paint calipers
-Install headlight gears
-Install hids
-Install gauge rings
-Install catch can
-Flush clutch fluid
-New ac compressor and evaporator. Refill system

If I sell the ZHP: (doesn't give me as much money towards the house)
-Interior insulation/sound deadening kit
-Exhaust

For every bullet that says "install" I already have the parts. I need to get my act together :facepalm

Getting stuff underway. Polished the headlight lenses. (plastic x) First splitter is on. Freezing out, so I'm taking a break to warm back up

http://sphotos-a.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-snc6/734953_774151233004_1642217642_n.jpg

I plastidipped them black, since I don't have any other carbon fiber on the car. Also they were a little beat up. The plastidip covers imperfections pretty well. Unfortunately it doesn't spray well in the cold. I have a few other ideas for it though. Stay tuned.

Thanks. I only did one good coat, because I wasn't sure how it would turn out. Shines through just fine. It does look a little dirty with the light on since the spray didn't dry evenly. For anyone interested, plastidip sprays much better at 70+ degrees (mid 40s today) and with a new can (this one was almost empty) I'll get a pic with the lights on for you guys tonight.

Glad to hear it. I'm sure it will be great getting home.

Happy Birthday. Will that exhaust increase performance, sound, or looks (or all 3)?

Thanks. Small improvement in all three. The tips look so much better compared to my stock ones in the picture above. The sound and pitch should be a little louder. Not sure if there is much in the way of performance gains, but I will lose 40 lbs of weight compared to the stock system. Easily makes up for the 3 lbs I added over the weekend by stripping out the whole interior and laying down sound deadening. I want to get headers later this year. I didn't want the car to be too loud with an aftermarket exhaust to go with the headers. I also like using OEM performance parts. My suspension was upgraded with C5Z and C6Z parts. My shifter and clutch are from the C6Z. OEM+ is the way to go. :)

Good News Everyone! I dropped the ZHP off today at the dealership where my dad works. Getting the front resprayed, the side mirror cover painted and installed, and recovering the driver seat bolsters. I'm pretty excited. I will pick it up on Friday.

In the last few weeks:
Installed insulation throughout the interior of the corvette

Still waiting to pick up the ZHP. It's taking longer than anticipated to get the alcantara in. It will be good to get the car back. Looking probably at the end of the week this week to pick it up.

Upcoming projects:
Corvette
Lower/Alignment
Install exhaust

ZHP
Oil change
Brakes

Ah, fresh alcantara. Mind if I ask how much that cost you? Did they use a whole BMW original seat cover or they recovered the alcantara manually?

It ended up costing 500$, because the replaced most of the bolsters on both sides of the driver's seat. Manually, I think. I just asked them to fix it.

Thanks. I have had a few bites, but nothing concrete yet. In the meantime I'm just going to enjoy driving it. :)

Yeah, I know. :( I would like to pad my savings account back up and cut expenses for now. I really don't need two cars at the moment. The ZHP is a better daily. The corvette is just more fun if you aren't doing a lot of seat time. Unless my driving situation changes in the near future, practicality isn't much of a concern. I am still kind of figuring out what I want to do. Been feeling this incredible urge to declutter my life and find out what I really want. We'll see what happens.

Diff bushing replaced last week. Passed 104k over the weekend. Running strong. Averaged 29.9 mpg at 75 on the 260+ mile trip down to Savannah. I definitely still love driving the car. Thinking about keeping her and waiting til spring/summer to buy a house. Maybe I should sell her and buy a different color combo (would like SG/OB with Nat brown. After driving Joop's car, my interior feels really stark. I'm not a big fan of IR/nat brown) Decisions...

X2!

As you probably know, Natural Brown is difficult to find in any combo, so it may take you some time to find one with the exterior colors of choice. Also, is it worth the cost to sell and purchase a different ZHP? I guess it does if you plan to keep the new ZHP for a while, though I would bet it will cost more in the long run to do so. Just my 0.02.

Thanks for the love guys. :) It's not so much about the cost difference between the two as it would be the ability to buy a house sooner at (hopefully) a better interest rate. As far as keeping it for a while... I'm shooting to keep cars between 2-3 years. But that all changes with circumstances

Yeah. :/ My brake booster started whistling. Figured I would take a stab by replacing the valve and grommit before I splurged for the whole unit.

12$ valve and grommet fixed the problem. No more whistle. :happydane

Washed both cars today. Prepping for the coolant system refresh.

Thanks everyone. Lol derbo... I'm leaning that way more and more. I'm ready to have everything fixed again though. It's due for a wax again. (Wax and buff it about every other month) Looks like the paint took a beating with all the crazy rainstorms I've driven through on the highway the last month or two.

The cooling system parts and tools are all together now, but the sky decided to open up again. We've had the hardest time getting dry weather around here.

Mileage update: 105100 (almost 11k miles since I picked it up thanksgiving week last year)

Recent fixes:
New brake booster valve
Refreshed windshield wiper cowls and trim

Current to do list:
Plastidip Front grill and splitters
Install new headlight covers
Install full cooling system refresh parts

Been thinking about getting new shift and ebrake boots. Does anyone have any old stockers lying around in decent condition?

I think I found fixes for some of the little issues I'd been having. Will post up more details later this week

Cam,

Of course keep the ZHP. :)

Sounds like you might need a heavy duty detailing session with some cutting, sealant, then wax. :)
