So like I said, I'm Russian. And in Northern California, the vast majority of cars that we Russian's own are total loss vehicles (salvage title) that we repair ourselves after purchasing them from an auction. Why do we do this? Well, first of, it is MUCH cheaper than buying the car clean title. Secondly, we realized that the fear of salvage cars is much undeserved.

So, my ZHP is actually a total loss vehicle, "salvaged" by State Farm Insurance, New Mexico. It is a 2003 Silver Grey Sedan, 60,229 miles, 6 MT. Silver cube trim.

Sorry about the pictures being rotated.

Here are some pictures of when it arrived and after about an hour of me taking it apart, in no particular order. Notice the bag of about 100 crushed beer cans in my trunk. I think I have an idea as to why this car ended up wrecked.

Timeline:
11/1/2012 Purchased car from Copart Auto Auctions, Albuquerque, New Mexico for $4300 (including tax, Auction fees, Auction broker fees).
11/4/2012 Car delivered to me in Sacramento for $550. Another $40 got it to my house.
Purchased new, OEM headlight trims: $64
Purchased an aftermarket, CAPA certified hood: $80
Purchased aftermarket fenders : $45 each
Purchased aftermarket radiator support: $54
Purchased OEM Bi-Xenon headlights w/ bulbs and ballasts: $250 each (in a stroke of luck, I actually bought AL lights to replaced my ZKW's, which we smashed from the accident. Lucky me!)
Purchased DEPO clears all around: $185 (I want to go OEM later. Only $35 of this counts toward repair cost because my OEM sides and tails are still good)
Purchased front end nuts, clips, and bolts from Niello BMW: $55
Purchased aftermarket radiator: $120
Purchased a used OEM condenser: $50
Purchased an OEM ambient temperature sensor with socket: $30
Purchased an OEM auxiliary fan shtroud: $90
Purchased OEM hood hinges: $15 each
Purchased OEM fender liner, lower driver side: $45
Purchased OEM hood latches: $10 each
Purchased OEM driver window regulator: $120
Purchased OEM coolant: $20

How did you guys like the tires?

HokieZHP
12-10-2012, 06:09 PM
Love them. I had DWS's on my car before these and in my opinion, it's no comparison. These tires are quieter on the highway, handle better (wet and dry) and don't make as much noise in the bends.

Hermes
12-10-2012, 06:10 PM
I loved my PS2's but I'm not generally a fan of A/S tires, I would rather run a dedicated summer and winter set. Luckily I live in SoCal so I don't need them and can run summers all year. It all depends on your local weather (IIRC Sactown is not too bad, you can probably deal with a summer tire unless you're going to Tahoe - I went to school at Davis).

nope...

the tires you have/I had are summers

the tires OP has with a very similar tread are A/S

basically I'm saying Michelin doesn't make a summer tire with a tread pattern like that anymore

For the life of me, I cannot fathom why he would do that. Making a US spec car legal in Russia, or any European country for that matter, is a tragedy.

Yeah... the ZHP is an awesome car to have and drive. I enjoy mine because of all the "not so special" parts that were added to it from the factory that makes it different from the rest of the 330's.

Then, when you start adding performance items like BBKs, CAI, strut braces (front and back), throttle bodies, a tune, headers, and exhausts...even the Sprint Booster...it all combines to make a car that's already fun to drive...that much more fun to drive.

Sprint Booster significantly reduces the throttle lag when you press on the gas pedal. There's a really good review on this product in the review section...you should go check it out ;)

I actually just took a drive to Nugget in my sisters E90. Throttle lag sucks. Feels like you are not going anywhere, next thing you know, WOT. I was hoping that manuals had a different throttle control mechanism, but they don't, apparently.

I'm keeping the black bezels for sure. What I am asking is what do you guys think of the trims in between flash and projector? It is silver, not black. This headlight was originally titanium.

I am getting the car tomorrow. All that is left is the bumper, really. Then off to smog/brake/light and the paint booth.

From when you got it, the headlights might have originally been titanium, but ORIGINALLY from the factory.. they were black.

One of the owners most likely found AL headlights from another sedan to fix the burning ZKW problem. ZHP's never came with titanium bezels.

Are you keeping the hood black or it's getting painted ? I'd keep the trim black. It looks way more aggressive... ZHP with Ti headlights would look off. Even more so if you're not painting the hood.

I bought these headlights used to replace my broken ZKW's. I know that all ZHP's had black bezels, which is what I want. But I found these lights as replacements(because of ZKW issues). Now I am just not sure how I feel about the fact that the inner lining is silver.

EDIT: I said black, I meant silver.

I am painting the hood for sure. In fact, the only reason the fenders look painted(they aren't, yet) is because the sides of the fenders were painted beforehand. This is done so that when the front end it being painted, I don't have to remove the fenders again. What you see on the fenders is specks of paint that fell on it during prep. When looking at it from the front, it gives the illusion that the fenders are painted; they aren't.

I'll snap some pictures when it is painted. For now it is Galaxy s3 in low light. That is not a recipe for good pictures.

I need to humbly say this car kicked my ass. Very complicated front end, and being the first time I dealt with BMW, I gotta say, it is hard to fix these cars. But I doubt I can go back to another marque. Looking forward to reviving many Bimmers in the future!

Avetiso given that you seem knowledgable of the trade, have you ever dealt with flooded cars? How repairable are they?

Vas knows what he is talking about. Flooded cars are really risky. As you can see on the car you posted, it only has 52k miles, no damage. But it doesn't start. Now it could be a small issue, but it could be a very bad issue. Personally speaking, I would stay the hell away from flooded cars, especially on something like a BMW. That's just asking for trouble. Not only that, they tend to be unreliable in the long run (electrical problems, mostly).

It is different than buying a wrecked car. On a wrecked car, you know what the issue is. On a flood car, once you get it, you start LOOKING for what is wrong. Again, I've heard good and awful stories. Personally, though, I wouldn't do it.

EDIT: Another fishy thing. The car comes with no keys. So it could possibly just need a key, OR the insurance is withholding the key to artificially bump the value on the car. This is because some people will risk paying more because they think all they need is a new key. I doubt it. :shifty

It's all put together, but I need to pass smog, brake, and light inspections. I can't do that until I have the bolts to hold the corner lights in. Those bolts show up on Monday, so on Monday I get to drive it!

Once I get my inspections done, I can begin registration. So hopefully I can drop it off at paint tomorrow of after tomorrow.

I thought I had already responded to this...

Anyway, I believe you can insure the car like you would any other car, but you decide what your payout is if you wreck it. Also, I have to have an insurer come here and inspect it.

That is how it worked for me, but I don't know if other companies do it differently.

It is. I was blown away, actually. Almost every car I have ever seen repaired (which is a lot), if it had an aftermarket bumper, you could tell. But this is really good quality. My only complaint is that the line between the fender and the bumper is a little bigger (farther from the fender) than on the passenger side, but I am 101% sure that is because of the accident, not the bumper. Hopefully I'll be able to adjust it a little more and get it perfect.

I'm a bigger fan of bright colors, so I would have preferred silver gray. However, I prefer the OB in general because it's had no body work done to it.
