First thing to say about my e30 is that I rescued it from most definitely going to the scrap yard and it has been the best and most reliable vehicle I have ever owned.

It had no radio or obc and couldn't shift out of first when cold unless revved beyond 4000 rpms had front end damage and lots of maintenance neglect, and not to mention I was the sixth owner. It had 2 different front seats but I still loved it.

When I first got the e30 I had a mechanic that would help me and did a decent job at a fair price, but that relationship ended after a few altercations during a motor swap and swaping of fenders. (I got screwed and learned my lesson from this)

Eventually I taught myself how to work on these cars and started to really enjoy the satisfaction from fixing my own car... thats when I was really hooked.

I don't have a record/log book for my e30 so nothing is accurate and really I have no documentation for the service bcause it is mine and needs no documentation of records because I will be the last one to own this car.

Mods other than keeping it going as long as I have (which are the most impressive imo) are bilstein sports and h&r sport springs, dinan repro chip, homemade cai, IE 304 stainless catback exhaust, sony head unit with usb and aux input and Rockford punch 100 (oldskool) and Pioneer 10", elipsoid headlights.

1989 325is
168 hp
4.10 lsd

I will finally get it painted soon and finish off the little stuff once the new paint gets me remotovated.

Updates to come. Hope you guys enjoy. :)

Here's my '87 after water pump belt broke last spring. Ended up a blessing in disguise as it ultimately exposed a defective timing belt tensioner. Has been in my immediate family since new. Aluminum diving board bumpers and all.

OP: How long have you had the IE exhaust and how was fitment / installation?

Fitment was good, just make sure engine and tranny mounts are good. Ive had it for at least 6 years maybe even 8 years, and I love it.

I fixed my neglected windshield washing system with a good pump/tank/level sensor combo for a total purchase price of five dollars. I mixed half tank with hot water and windshield washer fluid and at first only the right side was shooting but the hot fluid cleaned the left out and it works great now.

I can cross this off my list and consider it one step closer to getting new white paint.

Re E30 windshield washer jets, if the right side seems clogged, check out the T-fitting in the middle of the hood, between the 2 jets and under the noise / heat insulation. With time, the plastic deteriorates and leaks.

Just a broad summary of what I have changed and diy'ed in my ownership

Fuel pump
Fuel pressure regulator
Fuel filter
All six injectors
Fuel injection harness
Afm
Icv
Vcg
Throttle body
Water pump
Timing belt
A/c condenser
Ignition coil
Ignition switch
Abs ecu
Motronic ecu
Master cylinder
Brake booster
Alternator
All belts
All suspension
Driveshaft
Guibo
Cruise control system
Wiper motor And assembly
Wiper pump/tank/sensor
Full exhaust system

Although I have done all of this it mainly been a dd with minimal work other than fluids and suspension. The fact is I have never really put my mind to fixing the things that were not necessary to have a fun dd but if im gonna get it painted I will fix the little things...finally lol

I wasn't trying to be an :asshat, just giving you a hard time because I didn't recall the E30 ever being offered in Imolarot, even though it was offered in several other shades of red: Brilliantrot, Zinnabarrot, Hennarot, Karminrot, Karminrot, Burgundrot Metallic, Calypsorot Metallic, and Misanorot, not all of which were offered in the USA.

Hope that the E30s are holding up well for you otherwise buddy!

It wide open now

You don't wanna leave the airbag?

Johnmadd
04-29-2013, 11:46 AM
You don't wanna leave the airbag?

The airbag steering wheel sucks compared to the mtech steering wheel, I can add a spacer to fix that. The problem is that airbag cars pedal assemblies are welded to the steering column and I have the pedals for my five speed swap off a non airbag car... its a little harder to come by the airbag pedals being that they were only made in 1990/1991.

Are you going with one of the Z3 rack conversions?

I'm all about doing that on my '87, especially given how much I like the quick steering in the ZHP.

Also: if you have yet to do suspension work, consider the OE BMW offset CA bushings from E30 M3.

I nearly bought a set of Lemfoerder front bar links but realized for $8 more I could get a really nice pair of adjustable links from Ireland. Waiting on those now.

I have a set of Sachs-Boge RTABs but when I rehab the rear, I think I'm going with adjustables from Bavauto. Pricey but a huge tire saver if you're on lower springs. And no welding, unlike less expensive options.

Lastly and also in the rear, consider the aluminum mounts from Ireland. The bushings are replaceable and unlike similar options from other sellers, they are 20% less expensive and include reinforcement plates. Changing bushings is easy. I initially ran the street version of the urethane bushings that come with the mounts but later realized I could have requested rubber. The swap was easy and ride quality noticeably better.

Thanks for the information man, I've been back and forth on what to go with rubber or urethane. I have redone the front bushings and control arms with stock as I was trying to just get it on the road about a year or two ago so they will stay but the rear end will be getting rtab's, subframe bushings and the rest. I'll look into what you suggested.

The z3 rack would be nice but I need to keep budget down for now and thats not a necessity at this point.

Well... time, space, and financial issues have made me decide that the smart thing here to do is just keep my old e30 and sell the red shell or pieces on craigslist. Any parts that you may need or know of someone interested in any part of this or the whole thing, please don't hesitate to ask or make an offer on something. I also have other spare parts I'm willing to part with.

You have had the AW e30 for 10ish years and recently bought, dismantled, and dextered a brilliantrot one? Did you intend to use the red one for parts? Where is the acquisition I guess is where I am lost...Where did I miss this? Is it my old age?

Wholecar? Who is doing it? Cost??

Yes, the whole car. I'm going with the high end maaco job (5 year warranty). I will take all trim and badges off and have them do some minor body work. Cost is unknown yet but should be under $1500. I am doing this on a budget knowing this car will never be perfect and will continue to be my dd that gets 125 plus miles a day. It will be good to just have it be one color finally.

Waiting on my ride to come get me from Maaco. $1652 for base coat clear coat (door jambs included) with body work and 5 year warranty. They are going to patch a hole in the rear lower valence with a piece I cut off another e30 and pull a dent out of the rear quarter panel. Car has 98 percent of the trim including the spoiler off of it, which they will paint separate. IMOLA 405 is the paint I'm going with. Should be ready mid next week. :biggrin

I wouldn't want a body shop to do a job quickly. 99% of the job is prep work, and the overall paint job quality all relies on the prep work quality.

If they had the car done in a few days Id be really worried.

I realize body work is 99% prep, but there's a difference in timely work and being thorough, and just being slow/inefficient without regard to a time frame. My two previous vehicles had custom paint and body work..I'm fairly accustomed to body shops and their process. What I was tying to say was that most shops are the same, not always the greatest workforce and you often times run into delays with things such as what you mentioned john.

You bet I do! You're living out the dream I had for my E30, but never came to realize it before I sold it to my best friend. I always wanted to repaint my E30 to its original color, Cinnabar, but it was just too much money.

Well do the gloss for you. What about the grills? Not the chrome part.

Are you referring to the grille inserts in which the headlights sit? Do you have the U.S. style or the Euro style?
If you have U.S., I would HIGHLY recommend the euro style grille as those give the car a meaner look, kind of like an OE style eyebrow.
As far as color goes, I'm having a hard time imagining the grilles being glossy. I'd probably choose to keep it matte, but it totally depends on the direction you want to go with the car. Since the car was just repainted, it has the wet look to it, so matte grilles may not quite match with the gloss window trim, so it may be wise to keep it coherent and make everything glossy. Is this going to be your daily or fun car? If fun car, go glossy; it looks a little classier. If daily, then go matte, as that won't chip since there won't be any paint on them.

In my eyes, this would be a weekend/fun car, so I'd go with glossy grilles. Are you keeping the kidneys chrome? The glossy grilles would accentuate the chrome and make it stand out more since everything will look wet, not just the kidneys and paint around it.

I have the us grilles. Yeah, I am going flat black on them. I'll do the same with the window trim. I think I'm going to do the kidneys gloss. It's still my dd, it's not flawless by any means, but it is one color and I can proudly wax and keep shiny.

Yes, flat black is an excellent choice. I made all of my trim flat black on my E30 when I had it and couldn't be happier not having chrome anymore.

Botond, if I had a perfect e30 I would do the little things like that for sure. Just to make it clear though, this job was done on a budget. Paint is 10 of 10, but there are still dings which have my OCD impulses ravaging... you would need a shot to the heart like in some Quentin Tarantino movie... I don't know either. Regardless, I don't think you can do PDR for at least 30 days or until the paint cures properly. It would still be worth asking a PDR specialist. You also can't detail it for that time frame.

Be careful John! 55W HIDs in eBay fog enclosures may end up melting them. I've been running 35W HIDs in my fog enclosures w/o any issues.

If you use the 55W HID kit, I hope you won't run into any heat issues with your fog enclosures...

Does that mean that he has to keep her above 90MPH for extra cooling? This may be a good excuse for the cops! :shifty

From my research regarding use of 55W ballasts in fog enclosures, they ended up melting either the plastic lens (eBay fogs) or plastic enclosures due to excessive heat. That's why I went with the 35W ballasts instead.

Charlie, I will be fitting these into my elipsoid projector low beam headlights. If I do eventually do the fogs it will be 35 watt because yes, it would definitely be risky behind the plastic lenses.

Great thread John. Your e30 has come along way and the paint teaser pictures look great. Hopefully she'll be all done and you'll get her back soon.

Just my .02: I like gloss black with any red, and if there's any gloss black, every black should be glossy. There's another option for the front grill ( not kidneys), paint them it color matched Imola. My e30 had a color matched grill, I think it looked nice and you don't see it often. Im going to try to attach a picture below for reference.

Hmmm, wrong thread Ryan, it's been a long time I know :biggrin thanks for the feedback. I think the flat over gloss will provide a bit more contrast over gloss in my opinion but since I will be doing the trim work myself I am not stuck with anything so I can change it up if I change my mind.

There, I think. Do we have a blond emoticon?

Well, I had a budget I had to stick to and this was thousands of dollars less than a reputable shop and I just needed it to be one color. It will be nice, but not perfect, and I knew that it wouldn't be but for $1600 it was my best option ... full review of said business will come after I receive my car back.

I'm not judging Maaco by its cover, I'm judging Maaco by the nightmare stories of their work!
John spent more money than their typical cheapo paint job though, so hopefully he got their better work. I know all the horror stories were of the cheap paint job packages they offer (less than a grand).

I hope it works out for you, John.

Maaco where John is getting his car painted is probably different than Maaco near you BP. With that said, let's not pre-judge John's car until after John have made comments about his car first :thumbsup

You wouldn't have anything to compare it to properly; whatever you can find Imola now is faded enough where it won't look the same. :(
It is definitely a lot darker than my car is, but mine is very faded. It has been parked outside almost every day of its life. :(

If it doesn't work for me I can try something else.

I've not used this product, but most aerosol paints have temperature and humidity guidelines. Take those seriously. Also, wipe your parts with denatured alcohol on a microfiber before painting. If you have any questions at all, don't hesitate to call or text me!
