Well guys, we all know the sad fate of my last ZHP (see the thread here (http://www.zhpmafia.com/forums/showthread.php?8439-Awfulness-inside...)...) But, without further adieu, I'd like to officially introduce everyone to my new baby... With a project thread of course. :biggrin Just like my last thread, this one will feature the date, mileage and all the work I do to the car. Each new addition will be in bold. Pics will be added as I go too. :)

The car I purchased this time is a 2003 Alpine White sedan with black leather interior and silver cube trim. It has a manual gearbox just like the last car, as well as the cold weather package and navigation. It is completely stock except for the addition of a Sirius XM radio receiver (which will be removed). Being a 2003, it doesn't have the premium package, so no auto lights, wipers, or autodim rearview mirror. These things will eventually be retrofitted.

Anyway, let's start the list. I've owned the car for 3 days now, and already work has begun!

01/11/13- 126,653- Initial Purchase
01/12/13- 127,453- Removed the black leather interior
01/13/13- 127,453- Installed natural brown leather interior, OEM homelink, E82 M-sport perforated leather shift knob, and debadged.

The first photo. Just after picking her up, heading up to Asheville, NC to hang with some other Mafia family. The IR ZHP belongs to Cam (Torxuvin)... Thanks again for the ride from the airport dude. Good times!

The black leather comes out and the natural brown leather goes in. Also, in the midst of this, I traded the black leather to another Florida ZHP owner (non Mafia) for his alcantara. He hated the alcantara, so I thought I'd save it for someone that wants and will care for it. A good trade I thought and I'm so happy to have my natural brown back in the car.

6862

You'd never know I repaired this door panel from when the door airbag deployed in my last ZHP... I was pleased with the outcome. :biggrin

I also retrofitted the E82 (1 series) M-sport perforated leather knob today. My wife actually purchased this knob and the matching e-brake handle for me for Christmas, just a few days before I wrecked the last ZHP. So, I saved it and it went on the car today. I will retrofit the e-brake handle too when I have more time. :) There are a few comparison pics of the two knobs too. Surprisingly, the ZHP knob was a lightweight compared to the new one (75g vs. 160g... the camera angle distorts the readings a little), and I can definitely feel the difference. Very pleased with this mod.

Here's a pic of the shift knob installed... I like the contrast of the perforated leather against the alcantara. Will be even better when I get the e-brake handle in there as well, and a new Coby Wheel rewrap. :)

And the final photo from today... :) Debadged... Something so sexy about a smooth backside. :rofl :biggrin

Thanks for the replies guys... I had to get a FEW mods in... Tomorrow I leave for work, so she gets parked for 2 months. I had to feed the addiction of modding the car a little bit before I leave for work... Now I'm hooked once again and have plenty of time to come up with ideas, and order parts for when I return.

Awesome looking car! Can you put a pic of the ebrake handle up? I like that shift knob a lot. if its heavier weight makes it feel even better, I might copy you there :-) and how much were they?

Thanks. I left the silver cube in to try it and see if I like it, but it will most likely get swapped for the black that I saved from my last ZHP. This silver cube is MINT though... I was really impressed.

Nice looking car. These sure seem to age well when cared for. I have black cube with natural brown interior and was thinking I'd like silver cube better but now I think I'm a fan of the black on brown after seeing both. I'm sure you will have one heck of a list when you get back to shore.

You're telling me/us that I/we have to wait 2 months to see this sexy AW with those new wheels you have sitting in the garage? :foottap

Looking forward to it man!

JupiterBMW

You guys crack me up. Yes, unfortunately, I will be waiting until I come home to put the wheels on. I know, its been an insanely long time getting to having them, and now that I have a car to put them on, I'm waiting some more. :rofl Its all good though, as soon as I'm home, the wheels along with fresh tires will be going on.

In terms of maintenance, this car has a long list of receipts. Even though I'm the FIFTH owner (yeah, no shit right?!), a fairly detailed history has been kept. The last two owners dumped most of the money into the car. Things that I know have been replaced include the cooling system, power steering reservoir gasket, OFHG, alternator, valve cover gasket, ummm... There's more but I'm forgetting at the moment.

Either way, when I get home it will get new fluids throughout and new spark plugs. The PO stated that it has Bosch Platinum+4 plugs, so those MUST come out. Cam actually pulled codes and found 2 misfire codes when we first looked at it too, but no SES light at the moment. And I felt that it had a little less power than my last car, hoping that a new air filter and plugs will help that a bit.

I'm hoping that when I get home, I'll have time to finish my interior mods and get the wheels on, and also do the maintenance I mentioned. Who knows, maybe some more too. As for pacing myself... Well, I don't think I can keep up with Charlie, but I'll try. :rofl :biggrin

I am looking forward to meeting you at the reunion and to check out your recent acquisition... lookin' great so far! :thumbsup

Outstanding Jon! How did you save the NB interior? did you find something to stuff in the old one before the tow truck came and got it?

Yes, basically, I found a local CL ad for someone parting out an '04 325i with black leather. I grabbed the door panels, all 4 seats (including side bolsters and headrests) and even the wood trim. I put all that in my car so that I could save the FULL natural brown interior (all 4 door panels and all seats). I also put the brown wood trim in and saved my black cube. :)

I can't decide between this knob and the new f10 M5 knob which is basically a ZHP knob that lights up... Subbing to see the e-brake handle...

I would agree... I really wanted a light up knob, but I also wanted something different overall, and most people will see the car in the daylight... Also, I wanted a matching e-brake handle, something different from OEM... The e-brake handle will take some work though as it doesn't fit direct... I'll need a sleeve or something to make it work perfectly and fit tight. Updates will come eventually... I brought the e-brake handle on the ship with me so I can take some measurements and machine stuff if needed. :thumbsup

Car looks great - I really like the color combo of AW/natural brown/silver cube.

Though I'm curious why you'd retrofit auto headlights, wipers, and diming mirror? I actually wish my car didn't have any of these! I find the wipers really annoying...

Anyhow, good luck with your build :thumbsup

im so glad you got another Alpine White! Do florida plates go with the owner? thats fast that you got florida plates!

JupiterBMW
01-14-2013, 10:34 PM
jiggz- I can understand that the wipers would get annoying a bit. Honestly though, I got used to having them and I like them now... But aside from that, I treat my windshield with so much Rain-X that I barely use the wipers anyway... The lights though are KEY... So far, every time I get out of the car at night, I forget to turn them off... Good thing the car beeps to warn me. :rofl As for the interior combo, thanks... AW/NB is my favorite combo by far, but I'm not 100% on the silver cube... I will go back to my black cube when I get home again. I just left it this way for now to see if it would grow on me...

Derek- Yeah, plates are kept with the owner, so I actually slapped them on the minute I bought the car so I would look legal. Besides, if I got pulled over, they'd see an '04 white sedan... I highly doubt any cop would've checked the VIN... Never seen them do that.

Looks like the same one but about $25.00 cheaper. Also to note is that it says nothing about E8x cars, and only mentions E9x, and says it won't fit ///M's.

JupiterBMW
01-15-2013, 05:45 AM
Hmm, interesting. I honestly don't know if the two are the same, although I would think so. If our E46 cars can accept knobs from the E90, F10, and E82 generations, then I'd assume they would all be the same. That being said, I see the ECS link shows the knob/boot combo, so that would make them non interchangeable. I don't believe BMW intended for the knob/boot to come apart. Mine definitely was set up for the 1 series as it had a different shaped boot base ring. But, once the boot is removed, I'm sure they're all the same knob.

JupiterBMW
01-15-2013, 09:57 AM
Yeah, I am going to get that one, and I believe there is the Euro one that also has the rear fog option. I am going for broke with that. I'm just wondering if it'll require a new windshield for the rain sensor.

wsmeyer
01-15-2013, 10:05 AM
I'm pretty certain you need a new windshield. There's a flat black area on it that I assume prevents light leaking in the side. The Euro LCM also as a dial to manual aim the headlights. If you run across two of those let me know.

Good cuz as you well know that NB interior is a priceless piece of art.

az3579
01-16-2013, 05:13 PM
I'm pretty certain you need a new windshield. There's a flat black area on it that I assume prevents light leaking in the side. The Euro LCM also as a dial to manual aim the headlights. If you run across two of those let me know.

For auto wipers and headlights, you need a new windshield with the sensor in it.
As for the LCM, if you get the euro version for Xenon lights, there is one you can get that has the rear and front foglight buttons with no manual height adjustment. That's the LCM to use with cars that have auto-adjusting headlights like we have.

I think silver cube looks better, imo.

Sent from my SPH-L710 using Tapatalk 2

Silver doesn't go well with a lighter/medium brown such as natural brown. It's awkward, IMO. The black cube works much better because the color of the seats and the door card centers are enough to break up the monotony of the black without introducing oddball colors that don't belong there that the silver cube would. The silver wouldn't really match anything other than maybe the gauge rings, but those are barely noticeable in the interior.

If you just want the rear fogs, you just need to change the faceplate - there's no coding for that as the fogs are already wired and activated on all facelift E46's. They're all over eBay UK and DE for like 20-25 bucks. If you want it for auto lights, then you definitely need to code.

My guess:

You need a US LCM for auto headlights/coding. UK LKM for rear fog front plate to swap to the USDM.

Can you recode a LKM to become an LCM for US? My guess is this probably requires a programmer not NCSexpert.

The wheels look amazing, and the ride quality with 4 brand new tires is great. The car is so quiet and smooth. And these wheels are definitely lighter than stock. I can feel it when picking up the boxes with the OEM wheels inside, and I can also feel the car accelerate a little faster too. :) Very happy. Memphis roads are TERRIBLE, perhaps if I lived in a state with better roads I would feel different. Also, they weigh in right under 50lbs each (with Pilot Super Sports). I've found an ingenious solution.

1. Find a friend in the area
2. Go for a ride on highway with said friend in separate cars
3. Friend throws brick at vintage windshield
4. Leave
5. Get a rain-sensing windshield installed through insurance
6. Retrofit 04+ gizmos in old, vintage, rusty, 2003 ZHP.

:thumbsup

BTW, +1 for parrot bluetooth. I use it every day, it integrates with Siri through the steering wheel buttons, and Google Maps for iOS (the stand-alone) can interrupt AM/FM/CD input to tell directions, and resume playback after. It's perfect integration.

Ok, as for 'Vintage'... I was commenting to John and William the other night as we were hanging out that going from an '04 to an '03 ZHP without all the gizmos makes the car feel old. It was the first year, and it feels old in a way... I know, its silly... But whatever... I'm glad you all find it amusing though. :biggrin

Oh and Marcus, I noticed that. My car is 7 days newer than you, built 03/10/03... We're 60 numbers off in terms of VIN numbers... :thumbsup

In terms of the auto lights. I like and I want them. I think if anything, I could deal without the auto wipers, but I ideally want both. I need to figure out and start accumulating the parts to make it work. We'll see what's really involved. I will need a new windshield, but that's ok, I can handle that. All you have to do is let the car sit in the sun for a day and then go throw a cup of freezing cold water on it. :biggrin Or I could do the ol' spark plug porcelain trick.. I will look into it though. And BP, I will come to you for coding, not to worry. Be ready to code a Euro LKM too though, the one with the rear fog light and perhaps manual leveling if I can figure out that it will work.

In terms of sipping coffee, checking the phone, and chatting with the wife. Guilty on 3 accounts. :eeps Devlin will attest, I am a Starbucks junkie. I do not know about the Parrot Bluetooth system, but I need OEM Nav integration. I'd really like to get my hands on the OEM setup, at least figure it out. I don't need a lot of features. Would just like Bluetooth to work and the steering wheel buttons to accept "Call xxx-xxx-xxxx" commands.

Geezus, I get on the ship for one day and already you guys are ordering me custom license plates... :rofl

Hey Vintage, I have Parrot Bluetooth and it works great. You add a wiring harness system called "Connects2" and it allows steering wheel controls of your phone. It works great. For example: you hit the phone button, the music mutes, you say, "call xx" and it does. When call is over, music returns to volume. You can raise/lower the volume of your conversation with the volume buttons, etc. And, I too have been known to have a Starbucks in my car while conversing on bluetooth. No stock quotes though. :)

EDIT: I should add that Dice (or something like it) would give you Ipod and Bluetooth in one. Also, since you have your VIN memorized, VINtage fits with that too. :)

Dice will also give music over Bluetooth aka Pandora.

Basically I think dice and connect 2 are the two best options.

It definitely is when the rain frequency changes constantly. Always having to adjust because the wipers are too fast or too slow is beyond mind-bogglingly annoying!

Bad drivers are annoying, turning on and adjusting the wipers is easy. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe my non-auto on's still self adjust with the speed of the vehicle. It's been 7 years since I read my owners manual, but I think thats accurate... That or I'm mixing that up with another vehicle I've owned, lol...

Thats the route I went also, Parrot with Connects2, works great at low speeds. Kinda noisy at highway speeds (might be my roof rack prior to adding the fairing). I also have a DICE unit, but it's gotten really scratchy (in the speakers) with age. I need to figure out what the problem is. It comes and goes as the car rolls down the road over bumps. Hopefully just a bad ground or something...

:thumbsup

Hey Joop...the links here aren't working. Can you provide the part number for the knob and ebrake handle combo?

Well, as some of you know, I am in port again as a few of you received text messages. Yes, we get 5GB/month out here, and when its all used up, our router automatically shuts down. Last month it ended on the 27th. This month, now that I'm back on board, I expect that to happen sooner. :shifty :biggrin

Anyway, Dane, I'm not sure why the links aren't working. Like I said, I got them from www.getbmwparts.com. From that link, search 1 series parts. You'll find them in there. Sorry I would provide part numbers, but I'm trying to conserve data usage.

For others, I am in port for the next couple day. Text or call if you'd like! My cell number is in the members' contact thread if you don't already have it.

But anyway, that being said, I thought I'd drop in here and post what I've been up to with the car, even though I'm out at sea. Mostly just ordering parts, but I've been working on a few little side line projects and ideas as well. So far, the parts acquired include:

1. OEM wheels locks (with the key to fill the trunk tool kit!)
2. A couple random tools needed to fill the tool kit
3. the stupid tab that allows one to lift the trunk subfloor, mine was broken... (Thanks JP!)
4. Stealth bulbs to finish off the set
5. ///M dead pedal
6. Coby wheel rewrap- steering wheel and both shift and e-brake boot.
7. Asymmetrical side mirror lenses

Before I get home I'm going to order the Dinan intake, and probably a set of OEM Performance kidney grills.

From what I have heard apparently Dinan wont accept the point value of a used part towards the total needed to get a badge.

That way they make sure people earn the badge on the trunk.

I could totally be wrong though since I cant locate where I read that atm.

Yeah I would probably agree here. The nice thing about the Dinan mods is that they're typically viewed as "Dealer OEM installed" so more people know of Dinan parts, or at least they're more willing to buy a 'modified' car if it has Dinan stuff vs. all sorts of random 3rd party parts..

But at the end of the day, no, I don't think it adds value. For me personally, the car is priceless anyway... In my eyes, it will add value and not-so-specialness. :shifty

derbo
03-03-2013, 09:03 AM
The good thing about Dinan was whatever warranty they voided with 3rd products, they added their own warranty on top to cover it. This made them very pleasing to those with newer vehicles. However I remember there was some sort of disagreement with BMW NA as the BMW performance brand started which lead to the demise of Dinan at the dealership.

Dinan parts are nice. Their 330i parts leave me wanted something more hardcore however.

Umm, no. I didn't know there was a want for one. Honestly it's not too tough, but I can do so. The only thing is that you have to bust off the little plastic tabs on the bottom of the knob so it sits flush. Otherwise it pushes on iust like the ZHP knob. Interested in what? I have what I feel is the best shift knob already...

I won't be there this year, I'll be in Florida on vacation...

Maybe the following year!

Where in Florida and how long? We could perhaps meet up if you'll be in my neck of the woods!

Updates to the original post... Been home just one day, and I've already installed a lot of my goodies.

-Coby wheel and matching boots
-Stealth bulbs (had to complete the set)
-Install some small parts and complete the trunk tool kit (thanks, JP!)
-Asymmetrical side mirror lenses
-Dinan air intake
-AFE dynamic air scoops

I think that's it for today... Pics coming very soon... :thumbsup

Ugh, I'm sorry guys... Our internet cable has been flaking out and I need to replace it. I'm going to do that, and then I'll work on getting pics up...

Such a tease. We want to see "vintage's" latest goodies!

Ok, here's a few pics as I installed stuff. First up, the Coby wheel and boots. I went with the OEM grey with tricolor ///M stitch. I think its a great contrast to the perforated leather of the shift knob and e-brake handle. I also took the time to fit in the plastic ring so the boot sits flush with the shift knob. A finished look...

Next up is the 'Euro' side mirror lenses. These are the wide angle, asymmetrical version. They are eBay items, but the quality is great, they have all the same markings as the OEM ones..

After that, I got really into it... I started installing the Dinan intake, but found that drilling into the driver's side brake duct would be much easier with it removed, so off came the headlight and front bumper (very easy once you learn, I will do a DIY). I also removed the brake duct. The directions were very easy to follow, just time consuming. If one wanted to skip the cool air tube from the brake duct, the intake would be MUCH quicker and easier, but I wasn't going to half-ass it... I also installed the AFE dynamic air scoops as well. So, definitely a boost in my air intake system! :biggrin

I also received my carbon fiber splitters (thanks Justin!) so here are a couple teaser pics of them. The fit isn't PERFECT, but its pretty damn close. Will be getting those installed soon I hope...

And now, I go to Home Depot to buy stuff for replacing my internet cable...

Ok,

1. The perforated knobs and tri-stitch boots look ridiculously perfect with the black cubes!
2. Those splitters = :drool

Looks great! New alcantara for the win. I love the splitters. You should look into getting the carbon fiber rear bumper piece like Charlie did. Looks like I am going to see a completely different car in May from the one we picked up. :rofl

Thanks for all the replies guys!

Ryan- Yeah, I thought the contrast of the different textures and little bit of color set off the shift/e-brake nicely...

Cam- The carbon fiber diffuser is already in my sights. I have to sell this alcantara interior I have and then it'll get ordered... And yes, a LOT of changes since we picked the car up. Plenty more to come before the reunion too hopefully!

Re: the shift knob. Did it come with this plastic ring that went into the boot and you just hadn't put it in yet or...?

Re: the mirrors. What's the removal and installation like? I've had my eye on those side mirrors for awhile but wasn't sure how hard it would be to install.

And is your computer all working right now? :-)

You sure aren't a procrastinator, car looks great. What method are you going to use to mount the splitters?

Hey guys... Thanks for the replies.. As for the splitters, they aren't installed yet, but when I do, I will be using double sided tape. Picked that up today, will get them installed soon...

A new update to my original post today... Installed the carbon fiber splitters from the group buy set up by Justin. I have to admit, the splitters look awesome, but fitment was a little off, making installation difficult... Anyway... onto the pics. And, YES, tomorrow I will probably get her out and go for a drive.

Hmmm, cable internet seems to be working, but pics won't upload... Ugh, so frustrating..
