View Full Version : Epic BMW re-spray @ 2M Auto Body

Ok everyone I've finally decided to re-spray my car. After months and months of putting it off for the right time...well...the time is/was now apparently and began last Monday. I have/had a Jet Black 01' 330ci. Paint was in pretty bad condition. The body of the car was fine except the minor ding here and there.

I was going to re-spray Jet Black (668) but I literally changed my mind on Monday morning. About an hour into tear down of the car, "The Don" himself Marcus walks in and basically convinces me to go Imola Red (405)!

So here we go...pics will continue through out the process. Cheers :cheers

I just used a little persuasion. :swiss

Dave, I am glad you went with imola instead of jet black. You'll get a lot more comments and questions about the IR than you will about the JB.

IR is pure win.

Haven't gotten there yet but since it is flat blk (factory doesn't clear coat engine bay) it really doesn't look too bad.:headbang

All of you considering changing your car's color, let me give you a bit of advice from experience. Please don't...

My E30 was Zinnoberrot when it started life. When it was resprayed in 2007, it became Brilliantrot. The difference in color, technically, isn't all that much, but you could easily tell it was resprayed because of the minor color difference. This detracted from the overall appeal of the respray.

Plus, if you respray to another color, resale value goes down the tubes. I know most of us would never considering selling our cars, but you never know if the time will come where you might become desperate for cash and have to sell. In that case, the difference in selling value could potentially be a few thousand, depending on how well it was done.

OP,
Since you're changing color and it's going to be obvious in some areas, I would strongly advise you spray the engine bay as well. I see you already have the door jambs covered - which is good - but leaving the engine bay unchanged, in my opinion, wouldn't be a wise move. Eventually you'll come to the point where you will think "why oh why didn't I spray the bay"... It will most certainly come up if you go to any car meets. People will be asking "why is your engine bay black?".

I talked to Dave today. As a general principle, he agrees with you, BP.

For his particular situation, though, he says he's not concerned with those issues. The car is 10 years old. It has 120,000 miles on it. He does not plan to sell it. He's driving it until the wheels fall off, he said.

As for the engine bay, he is not painting it. A BMW Indy shop will charge 10 hours on each side of the tear down/reinstall. Moreover, he said, he doesn't expect to have his hood open too often. It's not a show car. If he thought the hood would be open enough, though, he likely would spray it.

This particular paint job has been well done. It's getting three coats of primer before any paint is applied. One will not be able to tell that there was a different color underneath (unless someone lifts the hood, which won't happen much).

But, yes, if you thought you were going to sell the car, or you were concerned about questions arising because the mismatched engine bay, he would repaint the car in jet black, its original color.

Good advice, BP.

Dane, I asked them about this today. Every car is different, they say, but a good ballpark starting place is $3000-$3500 for a full paint job. Depending on what you want, and just how detailed you want it, cost can be higher.

More.

If you want a proper paint job, expect to pay thousands more than that.
A cheapo paint job (good quality but not throrough, meaning maybe door jambs but not engine bay) will cost at least that much. A full one is ridiculous in price, unless you strip everything yourself and provide them with a bare shell...

BP, good thing is that Dave and Rich own the place. They hook a lot of us up in San Diego. That $3000-$3500 price is what Mafia members could expect to pay (I should have been more clear when I answered Dane's question). You're going to pay more, I would suspect, if you just walk off the street without a referral. Also, their overhead is a lot lower, since they are a three-man shop. That does keep costs down, which allows them to charge less.

In fact, I am always at the shop trying to work out deals for ZHP Mafia members. Dave has committed to giving all ZHP Mafia members discounts on work.

Most custom shops that I see around Va want to put chrome everywhere and the biggest wheels they can put on it, and the worst of all is the fake Buick fender vents.

^ Yes, it will be completed this week. I am finalizing all details and remaining parts these next couple of days. B&G suspension is having their 1st annual gtg/meet/bbq this wknd and the car will make it's first appearance there. Team 2M will have a few cars at the gtg/meet/bbq. Hopefully some of you locals will make it out, should be a good time and good weather this Sat.

Here's a link with the info for the meet.

Well, today I will get the mirrors on as well as the rear. Finishing up front bumper this morning and trying to have it all together by tomorrow...but....but.....my wheels won't be done. I still need blk rivets and about a day for assembly. Mark, I know you don't want me to rock those Vorsteiner wheels. haha but I might just have to

Marcus-SanDiego

I'll have to see those wheels on the car. When will the rivets be coming in for your new wheels?

Hey everyone sorry for the delay on final pics. I'm about 98% complete with the car. Reason being that my wheels aren't done and I've got to finish up a few final details. Never the less....here is a pic that Mark suggested I post. I personally didn't want to post any pics until it was 100% but...I guess 98% is close enough for the Mafia. Plus...if I didn't post the pic...the Don said he'd break my legs.:mafia

Just read the whole thread. Amazing work, and it's a lot of work (been there). The paint quality is amazing. The color is so deep, and the paint looks wet to the touch. Perfection.

In for final pictures.

WOW! Just went through the thread. Incredible end result!!! I have been considering doing a respray but go to Jerez Black instead of Jet Black.

Have a couple questions:
1. How long does a typical spray take?
2. Since my car is Jet Black and I am thinking Jerez Black, could I get away with not doing the engine bay?
3. Can I bring my car to SD to get the Mafia hookup? SD is only a quick 5 hr drive from PHX.

*EDIT: Nevermind. I would have to stick with Jet Black. The Jerez Black is too blue to pull off not spraying certain areas of the car.

In my opinion, if you're going to spray a car, do it right and do it the right way, including engine bay and door jambs. Ideally, best would be to strip EVERYTHING from the car and even paint the areas that you never see. Of course, cost is a major concern, but as far as custom paint jobs go, nothing turns people off more than an "incomplete" spray.

+1, especially on a BMW. BTW, it's amazing they even call "Jerez Black" black! I think you are smart to keep it the same, that could really help keep the cost down.

I went to see Dave about my M3 mirors I had dropped off. I saw him right after it happened. He showed me picks on his phone. So SAD as his car was truly unique. The body kit he had was by far the baddest I had seen. He was not hurt but really down about his car.

We talked about how long he had not done anything to his car. He was pretty down. I see him later this week

Man, just read this and I am sorry for you and your car, it was like losing a family member when I watched my e30 get lovin from a big ass tree, when my mother found out she started crying and ran to give me a hug, she knew what kind of relationship I had with this car. Cars are sentimental, im sorry for your loss.
