it comes with a complete harness and uses the data the DME is producing anyway

Vas
07-06-2013, 06:00 PM
What else can it display ?

330i ZHP
07-06-2013, 06:08 PM
Displays the following data in the basic version (multilanguage: German / English and metrical / imperial):

- cooling water temperature
- oil temperature
- voltage
- speed (including Vmax)
- acceleration data (0-100 / 0-200 km/h)
+ list of achieved maximum values

I opted for additional sensors
- air intake temperature (post screws)
- exhaust gas temperature (using the M3 sender that I already was using)
- Laminova cooling water temperature
- Lambda before cat Bank 1 and 2 (using the LC1 Lambda sensor)

- acceleration force and lateral acceleration
- RPM (on maximum values screen)

So, having installed a new system in my mother in-laws pristine 1999 ML430 (25k miles and she loves it and won't sell/trade), I have the bug to finally break the ice and do a system in the touring.

I have a few pieces from a previous car to start the project:

Weighing in at 37 pounds, the McIntosh MC4000M amplifier... 4 x 100W into 4 ohms and 2 x 300 watts into 4 ohms, all at the same time.

http://i225.photobucket.com/albums/dd62/smoulton0204/Various%202013/680P6030043_zps83966efd.jpg

Canton 6.5/3/1" 3 way components for the front and Canton 6.5/1" 2 way components for the rear - if they aren't in good shape when I pull them out of storage I will purchase Focal speakers instead

I used the Pioneer AVIC-Z150HB for her car and I like it - has one of the largest screens and it seems to work quite nicely. Adding back-up camera, XM, Bluetooth, GPS, HD/Pandora, etc

I am open for suggestions and ideas...

I briefly searched that head unit you mentioned, looks really nice. My only issue with aftermarket units in e46 cars is the dash kit. It just never looks "right" I would love for someone to devise away to permanently put an iPad mini in that space. I think the dimensions are close.

330i ZHP

Unless the station is strong and I am close...I get static. I live inside the beltway and often don't get squat

there are many others that complain of this issue. There are technical service bulletins from BMW on the issue. With the sedan/coupe a simple replacement of the diversity unit and you are back on the road with FM reception.

The touring doesn't use just the rear window like the sedan/coupe. It uses the left side rear cargo window and the rear window on the hatch. The AM antenna is in the hatch spoiler.

The bee-sting is just for the old analog phone system.

When I bought the car the reception was good - I lost it after installing a class-D amp (subwoofer)...and this is a common complaint with class-D (it used modulation pulses to produce power and FM is frequency modulation...so they conflict)

I removed the amp and switched to a digital amp and it improved slightly.

Then it all went to shit.

So I started researching and found the (lack of) solutions others have tried and then started replacing everything except the windows - I even added an additional FM antenna meant for hidden applications in hotrods and it improved a little

I have worked with quite a few people in the UK and EU on this issue and there are a few here in the states that have experienced the problem

Wow. That is crazy. I have been good so far *knock on wood.

I just installed an amp and subwoofer in my touring, used the ski pass area. I would highly recommend that location if you haven't installed a sub. Or, if you plan on installing a sub and want to keep your trunk space.

Stuart, what is this hidden antenna you speak of? I would be interested for the 2002 and E21 as a huge old school antenna is annoying and not exactly the best looking thing.

Generally, when you passively combine two antennas, the signals will add constructively in certain directions and produce nulls in other directions. Cross-dipoles can be an exception, but they're not going to fit.

330i ZHP
08-01-2013, 10:21 PM
BTW - BMWs first line of response on the issue is to blame tint, then anything that could cause a scratch on the antenna surfaces (just like scratching a rear window defroster)

Hermes
08-01-2013, 11:26 PM
Interesting, I will definitely look into these more as I have my period correct Alpine deck ready to go in the 320i. The 2002 needs a the new engine built before I spend time on audio in that car so I'll get back to that car later.

The problem with any of these hidden antenna's - ideally for FM the height of a metal mast should be like 37in...if you shorten the antenna, place it inside the car, etc - it cannot be near metal.

The antenna you posted (and mine) and others work much better in fiberglass structures (cars, boats, etc)

You have to mount these antenna high and center, as far away from metal, defroster, metalized tint - so on front windshield or a side window if not tinted with metalized tint. It looks like yoru 320 is tinted, yes?

the powered antenna supposedly went in the rear quarter while the non-powered (which I already have) is just below the A pillar

neither of which were apparently that good

The problem with any of these hidden antenna's - ideally for FM the height of a metal mast should be like 37in...if you shorten the antenna, place it inside the car, etc - it cannot be near metal.

The antenna you posted (and mine) and others work much better in fiberglass structures (cars, boats, etc)

You have to mount these antenna high and center, as far away from metal, defroster, metalized tint - so on front windshield or a side window if not tinted with metalized tint. It looks like yoru 320 is tinted, yes?

yeah, that's gonna be an issue since the car is steel everywhere. The 320 is tinted with 3M ColorStable which is non-metallized, bought it with that in mind. I'll have to keep thinking about how to do this properly

thanks folks - been a long process with a failed first attempt (a few years ago) ...I am determined to win the battle over steel to get the look

this time it is all steel welded and not alum epoxied to steel

It is designed to be a hybrid between E46 and E9x M3 power domes...

I am VERY open to any thoughts, criticism, etc

I'd have to see it on but from what I'm reading here, nothing but "likes" going on so far.

Here's a thought...can we make one together? I've seen a mini power dome with the scoop on the e46. But this one is great looking! My hood needs work, and this project would be the bees knees.

Ready to drive to the bodyshop tomorrow for the new hood. Anyone interested in the current hood? It is in perfect shape...just LeMans blue
