View Full Version : BMW Scanner 1.4.0 owners, what did YOU code?

So I received my present from China a few days ago. I've only had time to reimage a laptop with WinXP (old spare Dell D600 I had laying around and will dedicate for this BMW) and connect it to make sure it see's the car and so on.

I've found these 2 video's which help a little since there isn't really much on how to use the software.

http://s16.photobucket.com/user/KnightofDeeDee/media/NewItems/ScannerPart1.mp4.html

http://s16.photobucket.com/user/KnightofDeeDee/media/NewItems/ScannerPart2.mp4.html

So far I'm thinking I'll be doing the all windows down/up via remote long hold on lock/unlock, I'll also do visual and audible alarm (I do not have the factory alarm) simulation and door lock over xyz km.

So what did you do? Or want to do?

So regarding PASoft. Here is a nice thread regarding the set up on the coding.

I put together a whole zip folder with everything here -
http://tnhlserver.net/BMW%20Scanner%20140%20Tony.zip

I coded the lcm to the car to fix the tamper dot when I purchased the car. Change some light settings and added alarm features since I install the oem alarm. Can't recall anything else.

alexandre

I did remote windows down, remote windows up, disabled trunk opening when car is locked, enabled alarm, unlock the 4 doors at once with the keyfob, euro hazards, clutch-less start, and disabled DRL's.

I don't know what s/w William used but we did triple blink, windows all up, windows all down, individual up/down (vert only I think), vert top up/down with remote. I didn't have to do these other as the were set how I liked, but I would have done clown nose blink on, citylights off, and no chirp but lights blink when locked

wsmeyer
04-18-2013, 07:22 AM
I did top up / down from remote (same setting as sunroof)
Both doors unlock with one click
Turned on rear window and all auto up (after modding switches)
Disabled key in ignition warning
Set service interval to minimum

I did some other stuff with NCSExpert but BMW Scanner will do most of the common stuff.

You have to use NCSExpert to set triple blink. Plus an LCM with SW version 4

I have not tested it but I've read in several places that those are the only valid entries. I suppose if it would accept anything you could put 2 in there and see if it goes off in 1.2 miles.

A GT1 is what BMW technicians use at the dealership. I too am not familiar with it, but have access to one if I can get it to communicate properly. My step father used to teach the BMW Step Program at UTI so that's how I have access to it and his knowledge on using it. My brother was also a BMW tech at Braman BMW in SFlorida. I pick his brain on these things all the time.

pretty much did the same thing as everyone else. i had most of my stuff done already. i only added: disabled sunroof from opening when holding down unlock, code my other key to lock when moving. on several other cars, i disabled the stage 2 steering wheel airbag check, disabled checks to use LED bulbs in highs without resistor, disabled selective locking, turn on optical confirmation, windows up with key, etc. i use it when i'm doing work on the side so i think did most of the easy stuff already. i noticed that the window looks different depending on the car. so when people posts screen shots, it's not going to necessary look like that, even if you use the same software version.

btw OP, you're not going to be able to set audible confirmation without an alarm. only visual. you need the siren.

That it's good and worth the $26. IMO, if your going to go to the dealership and spend the $100 an hour to get some things done, you could do this for cheaper (assuming what you want done, this supports) AND you can help friends in the area for a 6 pack to do their cars. :)

And for the wait, it took about a week and a half. And this utility lets me go back and forth. If your of the impatient variety, there is a company in California that has them, in stock for around $55. But me being on the east coast, the wait was still going to be around 6 days.

Dane,

The BMW Scanner 1.4.0 comes with PA Soft software and can be set up on any computer that supports the Windows OS. I currently run my PA Soft/BMW scanner using my MacBook Air (new BIMMac) and am able to read and reset faults/errors, and look at live data....it is a useful tool but I realize as good as PA Soft is, I still need NCSExpert and/or SSS do to other things like code in my VO and stuff...

All of these can be installed on a regular laptop, you don't need a standalone computer so to speak....

I'm specifically wondering about the ones under the "Lighting Options" category. Also, even though my car's a manual, double clicking one of the test categories states it as an automatic somehow (in others it states as manual) so I changed it... I googled around and apparently its a common thing...

Hey quick q...will NCSExpert do more than PASoft?

No clue on how, but yes NCS Expert will do more than PASoft for sure.

I look at PA Soft this way, it easily allows a non-tech user to make pre-determined and most popular changes. There's no German to translate or anything like that. Check a box, press Apply and it does the rest for you. GT1/NCSExpert and items like that are much more complicated, but you have access to just about anything out there that can be changed.

Yes and no. One thing PASoft can do that none of the BMW software can is EEPROM editing. But that's a pretty advanced feature that most won't use without precise instructions.

In terms of recoding, NCS is much more powerful. There are hundreds of lines that PASoft doesn't touch. And with NCS Dummy, it's not difficult to figure out what does what anymore. NCS Expert is not however for diagnosis

INPA is for diagnosis, and is more powerful than PASoft in that regard. INPA is what you would use to sync the EWS with the DME

Hornung418
07-23-2013, 04:17 AM
Okay can you lay out a guide for syncing the DME and EWS? I have to get the car running by Friday or I will spend the weekend reverting back to stock because my sister now has a job and needs the car I've been driving for the past 4 months.

I mentioned that I found that pressing Shift + F6 will take me to the EWS 3 menu and my options are sync and reset. I tried that and it didn't work.

PA Soft can do some random advanced stuff like resetting adaptations, modifying software down to hex level, changing VIN and mileage of some modules, etc... Honestly at the prices these tools cost both should be in every E46 owner's toolbox.

So I've had my BMW scanner 1.4.0 for about a week now and having a good time. I have a few questions though:

- When I go into the DME module, live data is grayed out. Is that correct?

- Can someone explain all the different light options? Euro DRL? How are they different? Side lights as brakes? Yikes!

- as an FYI, when going through the Radio coding (NAV radio), my PTY was set to Euro. So I set it to USA. When you do that though, it will erase your saved radio stations when you write the code.

Thanks

I can't install the drivers for it any other way that I know of on 64-bit machines that I've used.

Windows 10....

Windows 7 x64 did the same thing.

weird. i have it running on Windows 10 (x64) and didn't use that driver.

Come on BP, You know how you can have two identical systems and one will take the drivers and the other you gotta do some round about way to get them installed...

It's happened on multiple systems and they all behaved the same way... lol
I'm treating it as the standard now. I've wasted so much time trying to install it the way it's supposed to be installed to no success on a variety of laptops. :dunno

I haven't had the time recently to invest in trying to find an alternate driver. I remember searching way back when for a different one but this is the only one I could find for this device, so "it had to do". This methods works, so I never had the need to go out and look for a driver that was possibly released after the time I last looked.

Looks like Tony sent me a driver package for it. Quickly peeking in the inf file, it seems it's an older version that what I'm currently using. I'll have to test it on a VM on day when I have time.

Thus far I have added Auto Close from the remote. I will be adding Brake Force Indicator and Rear Fog Lights if possible with P.A. Soft otherwise it'll have to be NCSExpert.

It's a real PITA getting it running without you guys as tech support.

I was able to get my cluster back up to the correct miles with a PASoft/IKE hack.

Thanks again guys.

I've always just used the FTDI x64 drivers from their website

There is a lot to read about coding options in this thread and several others: sorting out information from guesses can be a bit tricky.

I'm trying to set my system so that the car 'chirps' when locked and unlocked from a key remote. I don't have the siren installed.
Is this possible? If so, how?
Oh, and what is the "five dollar siren option" I read about in my travels?

Brake Force Indicator is but Brake Force Indicator with strobe is not, at least not in the US.

If you don't have the siren, it won't chirp. It uses the siren for that. The $5 siren is just cheap "speaker" for the chirp...

It's simply a piezo buzzer (<$5 from Radio Shack) that is wired into the prewiring for the alarm system. I had it on my old 330Ci. Worked perfectly fine.

An example guide is here:

I used my BMW Scanner 1.4.0 to code my VIN and mileage to my 2006 LCM upgrade to correct the tamper dot. Then retrofitted the auto lights and wipers and simply checked the box in the LKE (GM5) for the rain sensor. Everything worked perfect with no coding needed in NCS Expert. Also reset the temperature gauge buffer zone in the cluster eeprom to be a little more accurate to current engine temperatures. I use NCS Expert and INPA as well but I always reach for this software first. The user interface is so easy to use, I love this tool. At $25.00, this tool should be in every BMW enthusiasts toolbox.

can you explain this more in depth? what is this Hack you speak of.

I have an M3 cluster with 136k miles and my car has 167k miles. I want the cluster to adopt the higher mileage and i HOPED it would. i always thought that the tamper dot only made sense for someone trying to ROLL BACK but not go forward lol.

for now I had to use PASoft to change the info in the M3 cluster to say 330i and then change the LCM to have the LOWER mileage so that the tamper dot would go away but I would love to get the m3 cluster to have the higher mileage. :/
