So a post over at bf.c suggests that my car is in need of a DWE software upgrade to resolve a 2,800rpm hesitation under acceleration coupled with occasional poor idle. They suggested going to an independent BMW specialist shop to avoid costlier diagnostic fees...

Anybody in my neck o' the woods have a favorite shop they'd like to suggest to me?

Let me ask around. I have San Diego covered. I have a lot of BMW friends who live in OC/LA. I will see who they use and who they trust.

This recommendation comes from Mariano Garcia, a good friend of mine:

"Pecora German Cars. I not only suggest it because he's my uncle, but because he does shit right and thorough without the condescending disposition of other places. Let him know Mariano sent you maybe it'll help. It's in Costa Mesa on Baker and the 405."

Mariano knows his BMWs and he does not trust anyone with his babies unless they're good. If he is recommending Pecora German Cars, then that's good enough for me. It's a winner in my book.

Shane, quite simply, is one of the best BMW mechanics in Southern California. I've been using him for 10 years. His shop, EuroAutoSpot (http://www.euroautospot.com/bmw-about/), is located in San Diego. Many of the forum members (not just our forum) use him.

Shane was the first name I learned on arrival in San Diego. Nobody better in this area, but Pecora comes highly recommended as well.

Autowerkstatt in Manhattan Beach. Not cheap, but honest, knows his stuff. Kenny is the owner, not the best "bedside manner" but that's besides the point. John

Thanks for the suggestion, John; if they maintain hours on the weekends I'll definitely check 'em out.

I called over to Pecora to see if I could get some quick work done today over my lunch break, but it sounds like he doesn't really operate that way; I'd need to drop the car off and let him get to it whenever is convenient for him. Still worth looking into, but I have to plan a little more ahead next time.

NP. I used to use them a lot when I had my 540i. My ZHP has been under CPO so I've been going to the dealer, but I'll definitely be back to AW. Best to make an appointment. John

DAI motorsports on Mission Viejo, CA. Best place man. Super reputable. Very well known on bimmerfest and bimmerforums. Jack is the owner. Great guy. Highly recommend.

I've used Tony Callas at Callas Rennsport in Torrance for years with my Porsches. I've also had him service my BMWs and review my cars for PPI's.

He's incredibly honest and extremely thorough. He continually attends courses with BMW as he routinely updates his certification for BMW's and Porsche's. He has a very good "bedside manner" with regards to attending to the client.

He also teaches classes to other mechanics and has held several "tech sessions" for car geeks like us. I can see if he'd be interested in doing one a special BMW class the ZHP group if you guys want.

I don't have any affiliation, yada yada with Callas Rennsport. Just an avid fan.

The 2,800 rpm lag is that just a software issue???????

Did anyone get that issue fix in a BMW dealership ????

That seems to be the case for some of us at least. I only tried one dealer and I didn't specifically ask them to fix the hesitation, I just said "I would like to have the newest DME version" and they told me mine was up to date. I don't quite trust them.
