Guy, I am not sure if you were able to do this, but could you get lower? Were you able to lay on your stomach to capture this area? Would be curious to see what those ripples looked like from that vantage point.
Original looks good to me for an "in the moment" type of shot. A few cropping tweaks could make it stronger.
If it was a set up shot then yes I would have carried it out differently like mark suggested.

I'm with Seth, obviously. It was what you had to work with.
That said, assuming that's near you, you can always go back and wait for someone to use a route that you're looking for. I just wouldn't post a photo until I'm pleased with the conclusion.
