Doing the timing belt/water pump service on my Audi this weekend since the previous owner did not remember when the last service was performed. Car has 166k on her so there are a few things I need to address to keep this rare Nogaro in tip top shape...
Breaking down

Found out the last timing belt/water pump service was done at 119k.

Well, since I was already into this I decided to change everything out and zero the clock so to speak. It was also a good learning experience for me getting to know what is required for Audi maintenance...
All interference removed to expose the conti timing belt... note my Nogaro already has the metal thermostat housing!

Cam lock tool, a necessary tool for setting your cam when replacing the timing belt...

Old timing belt removed...

Here are a few pictures of the old Conti timing belt. Not a single stress crack could be found. Belt easily had about another 40k miles of life left in her but I won’t be reusing this so off to the trash for this part...

Installed the new water pump and started cleaning the front part of the motor.

With the new Gates Racing timing belt installed my friend and I are installing the tensioner pulley.

Turned out the passenger exhaust cam was off by a tooth so we had to take off the belt and redo this step...

This part is a pain but getting everything perfect has to be done here...

My friend and I ended up doing this 3X before it was finally done...

Timing belts...I do NOT miss those things. Necessary evil though. Good work.
I heard water pump and timing belt was a complete front end tear down...
You’re right. For the Audi this is a necessary evil but has to be done every 100,000 miles. I can live with that! [emoji41]
It is Rob but it is really not too hard to break down the front end of the B5 Audi. Just time consuming, that’s all. Perfect time to do this is over a three day weekend [emoji1417]
