I have been able to fit a full size spare from the front in my '05 convertible but had to remove the plastic & also flip the trunk wheel cover in order to gain enough space to clear the tire.

Most likely the VCG as mentioned above. When the engine is cold, run you hand or rag at the lower side of the valve cover next to the fire wall. If it's the VCG, you'll find a small amount of oil...
