That is correct! I didn't even know the E46 came with the homelink buttons, I thought that was only on the e90s but the E46 one usually has the SOS button and flap which I did not want either. Only...

I use permatex grey or black with good results. Don't like Red as it doesn't look original but I'm sure it works just as well.
Which "crack" are you referring to? The rubber bushing? OR the outline around the rear shock mount?
My guess is that the starter is weak or something is up with the return spring/bendix and the screeching you're hearing is the starter spinning with the flywheel before it returns.
