Thought = either is fine, as long as it's LL-01.

The list of LL-01 (from the BMW site)

BMW Long-life rating LL-01 Approved Synthetic Oils for the US Market:
Castrol Syntec European Formula SAE 0W-30
    Mobil 1 SAE 0W-40
Pennzoil Platinum European Formula Ultra SAE 5W-30
    Valvoline SynPower SAE 5W-30

Why would you need 0W-40 in Mobil and 5W-30 in all the others?

Its just the parameters for the LL-01 that don't fall under the 0w30 Mobil 1 but they do on the 0w40. Was my understanding of it anyway.

0w-30 is an energy conserving oil whereas 0w-40 isn't and energy conserving oils are known to sheer down over time compared to non, so it's not suitable for such a long OCI.

Luckily my Wally World's here carry them. Being near the BMW production plant may have something to do with that.

This list is rather outdated I think
Castrol Edge 0w/40 should be added
