I've never done this before, so bear with me, but...
Do I have to pay ahead of time if I wish to book a hotel room for this? Or do I pay when I check out?

You give them your credit card information when you reserve. When you check in, they ask you if you'd like to keep that card on file for incidentals and the final bill. When you check out, the hotel bills your card for the full amount.

However, some times you pay in advance (especially if it's an awesome rate). Most times, though, it's bill upon checkout.
