The best part is that I had to say it in Italian once and it felt real good. I was stationed in Herat, on a Spanish-run base where the Italian HQs was also located. The Italians were in charge of security. One day I was coming back onto the base. When we got to the gate, I realized I did not have my identification with me. The Italian private at the gate did right in not letting me in. He would not even let my Soldiers vouch for me; he stood his ground. Attempts to contact his bosses who knew me were unsuccessful. So, I sought some inspiration from Don Vito Corleone, and channeling him, in my best Italian accent, I finally told the Italian private, "Io sono il capo di tutti gli americani qui." It felt sooooo good. I think the area around my mouth and chin even contorted when I said it. He let me in. After that my Soldiers started calling me Don Adolfo.

Lol same thing happened to me but at Mazar e Sharif, Afghanistan. Only difference was that I worked on the flight line but couldn't get back on due to a pissed off German at the gate.

I heard some nasty things about Herat. Glad you got back safe.
