    Windshield replacement

I couldn't find much discussion here about options considered for replacing the windscreen. My "new" car has at least two chips that could be repaired, but the pitting on it is pretty bad, especially when driving into the setting sun as I noticed last night on my way home. Any recommendations on what glass to use (or not use)?

Here are the prices I found.

    OEM Glass BMW w/rain sensor, from 10/98 - $360.09

OEM Glass BMW w/o rain sensor - $327.81

    Safelite Auto Glass - $230 w/ sensor

Other local shop - $190 (need to verify about the rain sensor and brand of glass)

I went with Pilkington through WindsheildGuru. Ran me about $330.00 I think.

Safelite will order an OEM one for you and install for like $300 or so, worth a call to them about it. I asked for an OEM one with the tinted stripe across the top

Wow, no sooner had I clicked the quote button someone was calling from Glass Guru and while I was on the phone with him, I had another rep calling me.

The quote was $379.59 for Pilkington OE glass with rain sensor, new molding and a replacement BMW cowling they will pick up and install at my request. I talked them down to $349.00.

GlassMasters quoted $226.60 with sensor. They also said they could provide OE Spec. Pilkington glass (would not have the BMW logo on it). They would not do the cowling but do include the new molding.

GM is cheaper, but GG can include the cowling ~$60 plus shipping if I ordered it. It saves me the hassle and time to have it delivered. Leaning toward the Guru.

Just don't, whatever you do, get whatever brand Safelite defaults to. It is total garbage; it'll be totally pitted within a year if you drive any decent amount of mileage. Ask me how I know.

I can't believe OEM glass is that cheap; I remember Charlie telling me it was way more than the $300's... like 6-700 if I remember correctly.

Probably BMW-branded at the dealer vs Pilkington-branded at a 3rd-party, even if it's basically the same thing.
