This past time on the track in June was the first time I actually used performance summer tires on the track. Before that I always ran my daily driving set (all seasons) because I was too lazy to pack the car so early and swap the tires upon arrival. The improvement was almost unmeasurable... it's amazing how crappy all seasons are on the track.

Too bad the set of tires I decided to abuse that day cost $1000 for a set. FML...
Luckily they still have life on them. For now.

But... if it came down to doing track days on the most eco friendly crappiest tires ever, I'd still do it, because feeding the addiction is more important.

The cheapest of the performance tires I believe is either Hankook RS3 or Dunlop StarSpecs. They are the most practical for track days.

They're still too expensive to be replaced every season...

It's not the car you drive, it's how you drive it.

You can make then last 2 seasons.

Mount, and flip the tire to the other wheel to even out wear.

2 years worth of wear on my RS3s. There is still life left but I'm not tracking the Z4 anymore:

My first AutoX of 2014, on Feb 1st with the BMW CCA at Marina Airport. We got 9 timed runs. This is my 8th and 2nd fastest run--forgot to run camera during fastest run (of course). This run was 42.261 and my best run was 42.154. The AutoX chair drives a ZHP coupe and was 0.9 seconds faster than me. He has stiffer springs and a 3.46 diff, but I was on used slick tires while he was on Star Specs or Rivals. The faster prepared E36 cars were running around 40 seconds and the Formula Ford race car on Hoosiers was running 36/37 seconds.

I had passengers on every run, varying from 1 to 3 passengers along for the ride.

    3 passengers! That's a full load!

I'm trying to cheap-ass a Go Pro solution. Anybody have any recommendations for a mount for my iPhone? I figure why buy a $150 go pro when I can just use my phone

Yes, 3 passengers is a lot. With 1 passenger I don't feel any performance difference, though if I drive the same it's usually like 0.2 seconds slower or something than running with no passengers. With 2 or 3 passengers, the car corners differently and braking is slower and more sluggish. Don't have suggestions on the iPHone mount but have definitely seen people use iPhones to track in-car track video, sometimes combined with data acquisition using an app like Torque or Harry's Lap Timer.

Here's video from my autoX yesterday at Candlestick Park. Only had camera running for my last (and 2nd fastest) run of 48.557, with best run being 48.265. Again I'm about 2 seconds behind the fastest "normal" cars--there was like a Miata, E36, E46 M3, Ford Focus ST, and a few other cars that ran from 2-2.2 seconds faster than my best run. I also coached a first-timer in an E90 M3 and a guy who was on his 6th AutoX event in an E39 M5.

A better driver driving 0.7 seconds faster at 47.8 (E36 M3?). He's on Hankook R-S3, and they seem very quiet.

Somebody hooked me up with a phone mount yesterday so I filmed my last two laps. Will get them up later today.

My last fun from yesterday. I can't remember, but I think it was my 2nd best time.

I'm really disappointed in my A/S tires… I don't think they're as good as what I had on the 325 even though they were 25% more expensive.

StephenKirsch, I enjoyed watching your video. (The lack of pointer cones drove me kind of batty in trying to figure out which way you were going to go around a gate, though I guess going the other way would in most cases have taken you into the grass.) What kind of all-season tires were you on? Was the problem understeer? I've never ever autocrossed on all-season tires. My original Bridgestone RE-760 summer tires weren't the stickiest, but probably better than most all-seasons.

For this past Sunday's AutoX at Candlestick Park, I keep seeing more and more videos of people running 45.x or 46.x seconds, making me feel slower and slower in comparison! Here's video from a first-timer I was coaching on Sunday (in an E90 M3 coupe). He's much better than I was at my first AutoX.
