That extra mpg lost is one thing. I guess what I am more concerned about is the longevity an quality of the a/c system. My understanding is the system needs to dry out a bit before turning off the engine to inhibit growth of mold and bacteria. Also could be bad for the compressor, leading to premature failure? Someone correct me if I’m wrong.

Yeah I set it to auto and never touched anything aside from the vent dial since I got it.

    Bacteria where?

I’ve never once heard of this.

I try to limit my AC use simply to prolong the life of the components, but use it when I need to.

The AC system is all original in my 1995 Miata. It’s been recharged twice in 25 years. Everything still works.

I’ve heard of mold/bacteria growing in the dryer and on the evaporator from condensation. Can be responsible for nasty smelling a/c.
On my ZHP I had a broken compressor, and leaks in the condenser and a/c lines. Don’t know why the system failed before it even hit 85k.

The manual suggests leaving the A/C toggled on and the climate control in auto throughout the winter as it will use it for defrosting.

It's also good for it to cycle some over winter to keep the seals from drying out.

The mold issue that has been brought up is when you run the a/c for a while and the vents build up condensation before you shut the car off. The only way to combat this is running the fan without a/c for the last 5-10 minutes of your trip to dry out the vents.

If I do run a/c, I always try to run the fans w/o a/c before I shut off.

Dang. Now you have me wondering if I get dust collecting in the system, would the fungus that causes "valley fever" be able to grow in there?
