I'm wondering how it determines that there's a pressure leak. If it's thinking that air is leaking out of the cap, would it have to a problem on that side of the fuel tank, since air in theory wouldn't get past the tank?

I think it thinks air is leaking into the tank through the cap.

    Purge valve!

Here's what I think happened. I didn't connect the purge valve hose quite correctly when I did the ccv. So that's why the gas cap light went on and off at first. The second mistake I made was that I ran the purge valve hose underneath the hose for the power steering reservoir. So eventually the weight from that completely disconnected it and the computer thought air was leaking through the gas cap. I only checked the hose connections once when the problem first came up. Obviously I didn't catch it.

Came across this diagram that helped me understand things:

    Good write up too:

Has anybody else had gas cap light issues?

I had mine turn on again. I think I also had it in the beginning of the year. I'm not sure if I cleared it or it went off. I'll see if this one turns off by itself. I'm pretty sure I closed the cap properly. Do the caps/gaskets on these usually go bad?

Mine ended up being the Y connect on the vent tubes.

How do you get to it other than taking off the wheel?
Also is that the only part you replaced or was there also some hose?

I haven't checked. The light disappeared. I'm not sure if that means the problem is gone or not severe enough.

Wheel and fender liner had to come off. I found it using my smoke tester. Hooked it up to the gas fill tube. I suspected the charcoal canister or rear purge valve.

I actually just o-clamped in a plastic y-fitting from the local auto parts store.
