Do I need the extra washer between the hat and mount?

Should be a washer between the top of the coil and the bottom of strut mount.
Then you should have a lock washer or nylock on top.

I think you need an air gun/wrench.

Hmmm, I ended up using vice grips, but in a different way. Got it done though.

Sweet. I use vice grips as far up as on the coilover shaft as I can get it. Then I use my impact, but you can use a socket as mentioned.
