a friend once owned a Car lot with financing, he said that the down payment was what they actually paid for the car at auction, usually needing work, body, mechanical whatever ....
My friend called them today and said price was $12k
This is typically true - most "buy here, pay here" operate this way, or in the same manner. They will finance a car with a down payment that is either what they paid for the car or close enough to make the gamble. They'll hold a first position lien on the title and install GPS on the car. The terms in the contract are very strict and typically, if a car's payment is missed and no response is given within a certain period, the car is repossessed.
Then, they sell the car again with less down (they now have 0 dollars in the car) with more attractive terms, or even the same terms as above.
I've seen these type of operations sell a car 3&4 times in less than 3 months. A lot of these business may arguably be preying on the less fortunate, but often times they aren't. The people purchasing the cars are a very unique crowd... and take advantage of any situation they can.
