Replacing clutch & flywheel. Which one to choose? Intense chatter.

I have this intense chatter from what I believe is coming from the clutch area. I saw some videos on youtube with others describing this type of chatter. So, I was thinking that I replace the clutch and flywheel to cure this problem. It doesn't chatter all the time, but when it does, it totally sucks. After a cold start, if it chatters, I push in the clutch. When I release it, most of the time, the chatter goes away.

Are their any recommendations as to which clutch/flywheel combination to get from which vendor? Any feedback is appreciated. Thanks!

Well if the chatter bothers you, then you have no option but to go with OE, which still kind of chatters as it ages. It chatters a very very tiny bit on my car with 237k miles, but it has done so since 75k when I bought it. Still original...

Don't, whatever you do, get an aftermarket lightweight flywheel. That chatter will drive you up a wall. The performance is awesome, but I had one on my E30 and would constantly get asked by people what's wrong with my car (due to all the chatter). It got old quickly, but man did it rev up FAST!

Thanks for the input. Mine only has 81k miles on it. When it starts chattering, the car starts shaking, then used to occasionally throw the check engine light on. Checking the code says it's a cylinder misfire, but still runs fine. Was looking at some aftermarket options from Turner Motorsport, but based on what you said, maybe sticking with stock is the way to go.

I guess we'd have to define aftermarket. Turner sells kits that are OE-spec, even if aftermarket, so those might be fine. Post a link if you're unsure.

I suppose these are OE or OE replacements:

    http://www.turnermotorsport.com/p-41...lutch-kit.aspx

    http://www.turnermotorsport.com/p-13...60-e85-z4.aspx

And then there are the remanufactured ones from ECS:

    https://www.ecstuning.com/BMW-E46-33...tch/ES1892362/

Think I would prefer new vs remanufactured.

mine has ~130K miles and chatters a little too. depressing the clutch pedal makes it stop. drives me nuts, but my wife "can't hear it."

however, if you're having shaking and a CEL, you've got another issue as well. what's the CEL for? (have you scanned it?)

The CEL is for misfire on all cylinders. Last time I had it checked, BMW said they would need to charge me 3+ hours of labor to blow a bunch of smoke in the engine to see if there was a vacuum leak somewhere. I didn't want to pay to have them blow a bunch of smoke up my arse, so i didn't return. Just going to have the Independent shop do the clutch and flywheel.
