Justin, I would say that was the '80s style of design. That boxy look with fenders flaired that way.... I too had a 944 at one time. Loved that car but found it impractical with a family.....
I wouldn't say that the E30 ///M was "the real M3"....they all are real ///Ms (the E36, E46, E90/92s) they all were real as far as I'm concerned. Now looking it from a true driver's car, I would agree that the E30 ///M set the standard of the ultimate "drivers" car.
