Figured as much, but thought I would post in the off chance that someone wanted to swap.
I'm wondering if I could lightly sand the black cube trim to remove the top layer and expose the raw aluminum underneath without going so deep as to smooth out the texture.
Yep, that's me typing as the thought creeps into my head. I really need to catch up on sleep from the Canada excursion.

If paint stripper does the job, why go through the process of painting?
I painted my silver cube trim to try to refresh it. The color came out different (in a good way), but an unintended consequence was that the finish wasn't as nice. It's rougher to the touch, and the cubes don't pop as much.
How do we know it's paint and not anodizing?
