    Lorenzo's Imola sedan Project

Completed Vanos Rebuild with new Valve Cover Gasket. I was the Helper, Jon Estrella (Aut2Bahn) was the Master Tech. I learned a lot and am confident that I could change spark plugs and coils, and perhaps VCG, in the future. Jon did the surgery of the Vanos Repair with new seals and rattle kit.

    Here's Jon at start:

    Getting ready to remove Vanos:

Old Valve Cover Gasket was in good condition (rubber was pliable) and obviously was changed less than 60k ago (car has 156K miles). I had no records of VCG work in the past, but still glad we changed it, for peace of mind and to have the documented record. No signs of leaks.

    Vanos removed:

Working on seal and rattle repair

    All back together
    :

Finished work with Vanos re-installed. Job took 4 hours. Didn't run into any issues during the procedure. Beisan seals and rattle procedures were well documented and straightforward to follow.

Only hiccup was Service Engine light came on. Problem was we forgot to reconnect the Camshaft Position Sensor. Reconnected and reset the codes. Problem solved.

Results were smooth and linear acceleration. Previously, around 3,000 RPM acceleration hesitated and shuttered.

Thats great work! I too have hesitation around 2800-3000 RPM and I am also looking forward to a rebuilt VANOS in the spring.

Nice, did you have to adjust the play with the anti rattle kit at all by sanding down the washer? My valve cover gasket comes in tommorow so that will be Friday nights project since that's what I've been waiting on for the vanos job.

    No that was not necessary.

    Lorenzo's Imola sedan Project

Got a number of items addressed a few days ago:

    - Lemforder M3 Engine Mounts
    - Lemforder Front Control Arm Bushings
    - Genuine BMW Steering Coupler/Guido
    - Oil Pan Gasket (to address leak)

Control Arm Bushings were overdue. One was badly torn.

Engine Mounts were due. See tear and leaking fluid:

Work performs by BMW of Sterling. Normally, I'd never do to a dealer for this service, but they agreed to $1000 labor for all the above and I supplied the parts. Took them all day. They said they are trying to be more competitive. They normally charged $1250 just for Oil Pan Gasket at 8 hours labor. They discounted by 20% and did the other works at no additional charge (CAB, Guibo, engine mounts), since everything was apart for the oil pan job.

I've been thinking about a new steering coupler. Did you notice a difference ?

Not a big difference, but some. There is less play in the steering wheel. My old one was in fair shape - no tears. Part is only $50. So worth it IMO, if you don't have to pay much or anything for labor.
