Sorry it doesn’t live up to y’all’s expectations. Now is probably the right time to sell it though. I’m not sure I have any recommendations on a new ride.
My vote also goes to E90 M3 or E39 M5. If you haven't, just go and drive one and I think you guys will find what you are looking for.

It has to have a pretty loud exhaust to really hear how good it is. Skip to 3:30 and 4:10 in this video for a couple of good examples. The car sounds absolutely insane with the right exhaust (or lack thereof.) https://youtu.be/zIYup0anpbc

Diesel, hybrid turbos, stage 4 tune...not that I'm considering that or anything.
I thought the new M2 was THE modern BMW to have. I guess sometimes the glove doesn't fit.

I don't know whose car is in the foreground of this pic...but it's cool too! VERY cool.
I drove another friend's 1M today as well...the 135 blew it away. You'd have to a good bit of the same mods to make that thing fun and then it ruins the parts bin "artificial classic" factor. It looks awesome though. Big fat ass.
FINALLY got to drive the same friend's E36 M3 as well. Very fun. The common statement that it's a "more raw" ZHP I fully agree with. A little lighter on it's feet.
I'm still really happy with the E92 M3 so far. Drove them all pretty much back to back today and it's really refined compared to the 135 and 1M, but yet still moves. And of course, has the modern fit/finish compared to the E36. But really...my happiness boils down to one thing...a V8 is a V8.
