    Luckily, someone came up with a good system. Aircraft flying east (0-179 degrees) should be at odd thousand feet MSL...31K, 33K, 35K, etc. Aircraft flying west (180-359 degrees) should be at even thousands, so there is at least 1,000 feet separation. If flying VFR (Visual Flight Rules) below 18,000’, then add 500’; flying east, 5,500’, 7,500’, 9,500’, etc.; west, 6,500’, 8,500’, etc. There should always be at least 1,000’ separation between VFR aircraft and 500’ between VFR and IFR (Instrument Flight Rules) aircraft. VFR aircraft above 18,000’ should fly at altitudes assigned by ATC.
