I may have a kind of fix for loose shift knobs.

I may have a fix for loose shift knobs on our cars. Mine doesn't appear to be cracked, but it does display damage to the two ridges at the very bottom of the mounting hole. It pops off at very inopportune moments.

I have a lot of butyl tape hanging around, normally used for installing windows. I find it to be a product with many other uses- in this case I rolled a small (1/4") ball and dropped it into the hole to nest into the bottom center*. Then I put a bit of spit on the end of a long tool and pushed the butyl in a bit more, to secure it. Waited for the spit to dry and reinstalled the knob: it's given me no trouble since.

When time comes to install a new part (or do service work), I'll just pull the damaged knob off and use a solvent to remove any butyl stuck to the shift lever.

It's been running in the 90's here (Maine): I'm going to pull it apart in a few days to check for any melting, but I don't think I'm going to find any. At any rate, if anything new develops, I'll report here.

*Holding the knob upside-down here: it will become the top when installed.

    Comments welcome...

My fix is working very well and I'm glad that's the case, because FCP just rejected my order for a new shift knob as "on back order with no ETA". Anyone know of a source for this part?

ON EDIT: they seem to be avail from Amazon

yeah all I did was put some electrical tape along the stop of the shift lever in that notch that helps align in and the knobs been stuck ever since.
