    There shouldn't be a need.
You can code the factory guage to read real temps.

It's not the car you drive, it's how you drive it.

My main gauge in the cluster was becoming unreliable and would sometimes be east of the middle which freaked me out unnecessarily. Well the first time it happened, I pulled over immediately and shut the car down. Then I realized those were false alarms.

I bought a ULTRAGAUGE II and plugged it into the OBD port. Has high temp alarm and real time coolant temperature.

If this is your problem, try them out here. Put an orange film on mine and it looks great.

    AZ3579 & Oli77,
Thank you for the education, I just bought my car a week ago today & boy do I have some catching up do.
Being an old school hot rodder, you'd just tap into the intake manifold, lol, gotta love this high era

Sounds like you have a faulty sensor, which isn't a hard fix last I checked.
With a corrected gauge (through software coding), the built in gauge is just as accurate as any aftermarket one.

The tool you need is BMW Scanner (comes with PA Soft software - a member on here sells it). Let me know if you want to pick one up and I can send you his info. It allows you to read all of the BMW's modules, not just OBD2 codes, as well as do some software coding to customize settings in modules installed in your car.

If you do pick one up, I can point you in the right direction on how to code the gauge so it reads accurately.

My factory gauge is working, just doesn't tell me the temp in deg° F
I think I'll get that "Ultra gauge MX" it also shows the trans temp, pretty slick

That's just the thing BP, my sensor is fine since the ultraguage is rock solid on reading the temp. Clearly shows the cluster component (i.e., needle) is bad and erratic.

Unless there are 2 water sensors (which I think is not the case).

The ultraguage does a lot of cool things OP.
