    I've only encountered cracking/breaking of the cylindrical pot metal parts that allow the key cylinder to rotate without resistance so the door won't unlock. The parts are included in the eBay kit. I replaced all the old parts with the new ones while it was apart. Then was able to use my original key.
    Search for "bmw e46 lock repair youtube" & you'll find instructional videos. Good luck!
