    That's cool, we pay tax on "value" and after my kid totalled a beautiful black 6MT sedan a couple years ago (paid $11k, insurance paid $5800), I found the difference between insurance value, and willingness to pay. It tempers my willingness to pay $24k for a nice looking sedan, even with "only" 75k miles...

    Appreciate all the perspectives.

    Yeah it sucks, especially for higher mileage cars like mine (343k km), I have had 2 accidents, both times insurance wanted to total my car but I fought and got them to fix it. The only way to ensure you won't get a low evaluation is to get an agreed-value policy
