Electrical Short

I just found out that I have been driving for quite a while that I do not have Reverse lights. No wonder my Right Side mirrors do not move when I do a Reverse.

Took in to local shop this morning for a "quick" fix by replacing the Reverse switch by the transmission. Still no good. Keeps on blowing the fuse. We surmised that the short would be somewhere after the reverse switch. We also did check both rear lighting assemblies in the trunk by disconnecting them. So now I have to take back to shop for electrical troubleshooting and trace the short.

Any ideas where to look for the short?

Assuming you have manual, check the harness Pin 1 and Pin 2 to ground for continuity.

Exactly the same schematic that my mechanic had in his computer. He did check something to Ground from the harness for both left and right side. I do not know if it was Pin 1 and Pin 2.

I do not want to intrude when he was into his troubleshooting and start yapping and asking questions.

It could be the wiring loom that goes to the trunk. Specifically the part that goes through the rubber part. The wires get brittle and break off right there.

This was exactly what was the problem. A short inside the wiring loom/harness that goes to the trunk from the cabin. Two wires were rubbing and burnt through then shorted. Had to splice and reconnect in accordance to BMW standard connection and re-insulation.

Whew, best case scenario right there. Cause if not there, iono where else it would be lol

Damn that's worth doing as a preventative just to make sure your trunk doesn't catch on fire

Really not the biggest fan of how they've laid that out. Talk about butt crimp galore! The wire harness where all the crimps are is going to be massive. At the very least they should've staggered them so the bundle isn't huge, so it's not as strained.

I guess you could just cut all the pre-crimped crimps off and solder yourself...

I feel like you can just pull them to make them staggered. But I would totally just cut and solder them all.
