The issue is that the potato's shutter can't be controlled to be open longer, which is what is needed for more light to be absorbed by the sensor. As a result, pictures taken in the dark tend to stay pretty dark without the flash.
I'm actually impressed it captured that much light. My potato doesn't seem to do that well in low light...

Somewhat similar lighting conditions, though in my case it was "almost" dark out as opposed to completely dark like in John's shot.
Regardless, my comment was mainly a joke regarding the iPhone that John oh-so-lovingly refers to as the potato for the same reason I said what I said.
