Plus San Ramon is not far from San Francisco. We're talking terrible traffic in that area. Makes a lot of sense for that transmission. Hell, I drove auto tranny when I lived in San Francisco.
Yes, transmission type is a preference rather than a defining charactaristic. I, too, have owned auto-equiped BMWs.

Looks like Greg had the transmission replaced at 19,200 miles. It's been no problem since then.
