Probably the same reason the dealer didn't know what it was. The PO probably couldn't have cared less what it was and decided to jump for that new Mazda Whatcha-ma-call-it.

That's true. At first I was surprised by the number of people who don't know what they own. Now I am not. Lots of private dealers out there sell these ZHPs without adding a premium for the package. They take them in on trade in and have no idea what they're selling. That likely means that the previous owner didn't know what they had either, since the dealer isn't going to -- usually -- sell a car at a loss.
If I had it to do all over again, I would have paid a lot more attention to private-dealer sales. Seems like a great place to pick up a gem at the right price (assuming dealer doesn't know what it has).

No it's a steptronic. Which for where we live and given it's a daily driver is better for me. I know I give up a little performance but all in I'm happy.
